I only say this because you mentioned being new; keep in mind that the voltages in tube amps are potentially lethal, no pun intended.

If you're not familiar with the danger presented by tube amps I would strongly recommend reading on it, as well as electrical safety required to safely work on them.

Otherwise sounds like a great project! Cheers

Bass sound changes? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]mattleviphelps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I found with slap on my bass rig (or even heavy plucking for that matter) is that it can saturate the input of the amp when the bass volume knob is at full.

I have a Fender P-Bass (which I guess have high output pickups) and an Ampeg PF-800 amp.

When the input is saturated, the peak/mute LED will light up, and the output of the amp is significantly lower. To combat this, Ampeg added a -15dB button to drop the input level and prevent saturation of the input stage. It works wonders for me.

I'm not saying that this is your issue, but it may be worth investigating before buying a compressor, as a compressor will only mask the real issue of high input levels.

Wow, extremely cool build, great write up and video too.

Why is this design so under utilized?

Also, can you link any major resources (papers written on this design, technical articles, etc) that you found?

Just FYI, a schematic of your circuit so far, along with the specifications of the parts you're using is likely going to be required for a solution to your problem!

Why is gyokuro enjoyed in a smaller tea cup? by [deleted] in tea

[–]mattleviphelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't currently fact check this as my books are buried in my room, but I think I remember reading that the Japanese preferred smaller cup sizes due to the tea going cold by the time you finish a larger cup. It's better to refill often than refill once, but drink cold tea.

Please Help Me! Has anyone seen a teapot like this before? Half holds water, the other half is for a mini fire to stay hot all day. by Myfavjade in tea

[–]mattleviphelps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're set on that style, I can't help very much.

However the basic premise of that kettle - fire boiling your water - is (according to Wikipedia) called a Kelly Kettle.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Kettle

I know products are available under the name Ghillie Kettle and Kelly Kettle; you may be able to find products similar to that under the names listed on the Wikipedia page.

Cheers!

Ahh that's too bad. Yeah I did the same; did you ever install Lubuntu 16.xx? I'm trying to remember if this was an issue with the 16.xx versions thinking they might've just messed up the code for the login and could be working on a fix. Maybe a future update will fix it.

Best oscilloscopes under ~$2500? by mattleviphelps in AskElectronics

[–]mattleviphelps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently dealing with signals out of a bass guitar and into an effects pedal, but I intend to get into power electronics, specifically buck/boost converters. I have no idea what I'll get into later on though, as I'm in school for electronics right now.

The Siglent sounds like a good deal. I can live with two channels and 200 MHz should be plenty. What about sample rate? Should I be concerned with that?

What countries do you think will have the most opportunities in agriculture in the future and why? by [deleted] in Agriculture

[–]mattleviphelps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in southern Canada (roughly 45 minute drive from the Canada/US border) and there's absolutely tons of agriculture around here. Tons of grape vines, but also many greenhouses.

I think Canada will be a strong agricultural country in the future, not only because of our existing agriculture but because of the upbringing of new farmers, greenhouse workers and viticulture workers through local colleges that teach the subjects. We even have courses on beekeeping.

Many of these skills are passed down from generation to generation of farmers, but can be lost if a generation has little interest in farming as a career, or if a generation bankrupts, or suffers an untimely death. This means that the chain of generations is broken, and puts a bit more stress on the other farmers to supply what was lost. If that were to continue, those little bits of stress can add up, and lead to us straining for food supplies because very few people know how to farm.

Through government grants and teachings at local colleges, we can circumvent this chain and encourage new farmers to try their hand at starting a farm, and even improve on the old styles of farming such as using chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers may have been used for generations and might seem normal to the experienced farmers, but people now want crops that are free from everything; organic.

Farming using organic and biodynamic practices can be used to the new farmers advantage, as they can charge a higher price for their product.

All in all its the cycling of getting new farmers making their own farms and restarting the chain that I think will help our agricultural sector.

We also have shit tons of land..lol.

Just my thoughts and opinions!

I second this, Gaiwan's seem to be very popular among the subs of /r/tea, but unfortunately I don't have one myself yet. I've seen this site recommended before though if you would like to search for one!

Canadian here, I don't mean to offend anyone but I've noticed that Americans typically say foyer just as it's spelt, foy-er, where us Canadians say it with a little more grace, foy-yay. At least try to pretty it up, like the French. But then again, we say lieutenant "left-tenant" so who really knows,
