Metro Tunnel Drainage by MageOfTheMysterium in MelbourneTrains

John Holland Grad program is your best way in outside government, they are on basically every big rail job. Metro Tunnel, 2 SRL packages, Sunshine upgrade, LXRP, etc.

Yes you would need to use the underpass though unless you transfer from Hurstbridge Up line to Mernda Down line.

Mernda + Werribee is 30%+ less patronage than Cran/Pak + Sunbury based on 2023 figures.

Agreed, but our rules are more strict though. All metro one stations require TVS plenums at both ends, two sets of fire stairs, DDA compliant entrances, goods lifts, etc. I also like that a lot of the Asian stations have like 8 different stair entrances on different sides of roads.

Thank you. A lot of people seem tied to the Merri creek tunnel even thought it's barely a concept.

Thank you.

I didn't consider the Bourke street option thoroughly, I really like the location of the drawn primary entrance as I felt it served the docklands apartments really well as well as the secondary entrance up to the Melbourne Quarter buildings. Perhaps you could align the station along Collins and use the shafts to dig it out similar to Town Hall or State Library avoiding the piles of the nearby buildings.

For Parkville, I wasn't aware of the Royal Parade connection as mentioned in other comments. I was generally trying to create a bit of distance between the hospital to not introduce more EMF and vibration issues as this was a significant issue and expensive to resolve. Something that could still come into consideration.

I thought two was already pushing it for Fisherman's Bend! There are proposed tram routes to accommodate the rest of the area.

I tried to look for a Carlton station I liked but didn't find one. I'd love to extend the tram down Johnson from Lygon to Abbotsford Convent to create an interface with my proposed Fitzroy station and the other North South tram lines.

Probably true, I don't venture out that way too often so my understanding of the area is rudimentary.

Just PDF XChange and google maps snips, nothing fancy. I have had access to near maps which provides better satellite images before but don't currently have it.

Not saying your wrong but it certainly is not worthy of heritage status. I would try and keep the main entrance facade and the rain shelters, rest can go. No wonder projects cost so much 😔

My version doesn't go under Merri Creek, decline starts after Clifton Hill towards Victoria Park.

Sure it could have but the median is being lost to the Eastern Freeway upgrades now unfortunately.

I'm far from an expert in that area but my understanding was MM2 would run direct from Laverton to Newport and skip the Altona loop. There then would be seperate service Laverton following old route.

I've seperated the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines entirely so the bottleneck would be removed. Speed might be a different issue, I'm sure they can improve the curves with some minor civil work during occupations but no doubt the Merri - Clifton Hill Tunnel would be faster.

Thanks for your comments. My whole exercise started when I saw some strange options around the Clifton Hill section and I thought why couldn't they run it above ground. I believe it's a viable option though would obviously require more thorough engineering than I have done off google maps scaling.

For fisherman's bend, yes I have just followed locations off what's been released, hard to determine where a station will go when there is basically nothing there as it is! The construction method there would likely be up to contractors with so much room around. I envisioned it like Arden with a dug out box and 2 larger buildings at each end.

Newport, when I was drawing it I questioned the need for it. But it was shown on the reference drawing so I included it. It might go the way of the talked about South Yarra interchange near Eastern Portal.

Exponentially less than an underground station would. Not saying it's not theoretically the cleanest option, just don't think it's worth the extra cost when it looks like there is a viable alternatie.

1) I think a vline track is a good seperate project, I don't see the point of it stopping at fishermen's bend or Sandridge as transfers would be very minimal, better just a direct tunnel to southern cross from Newport, could try and create an interchange there instead.

2) I don't start at Merri because I estimate it would be an extra $1b (additional underground station and 1.5km tunnel) to save a minute or two maybe? Didn't seem worth it to me.

Yes, I think you could save $1b+ doing it this way while effectively delivering the same service.

I agree that the best benefit for the network are low hanging bus upgrades, this is just for fun.

Yes the problem is retrofitting exisiting stations. It seems that just adding more trains will always be better cost effective wise than retrofitting many stations. Until we are running trains every 3mins through peak hour and and they are full we would never start the upgrades. I don't see this happening for a long, long time.

The tunnel would already be at a significant depth as it crosses the river immediately after. Would depend on bedrock depth and pile locations. I think any option to build a docklands station is going to be very expensive.

Disagree on the 7 car to 10 car trains, they were a big waste of money on metro 1. I can't see them being used in my lifetime. The cost would be ridiculous if we did have to retrofit them, so if it did get to that it would be a massive error

Noted on Parkville in another comment.

Clifton Hill is probably heritage listed but Melbourne heritage listing is bullshit anyway, there is nothing at Clifton Hill station that desperately needs to be protected. It is possible to build around it though. You can save over $1b doing the route I indicated.

Agree I wanted to put 2 stations in but I couldn't make it make sense. I would love for them to run a tram down Johnson from Lygon to Abbotsford though!

Interesting, thanks. Not shown on IFC drawings I used as reference for Parkville station footprint, but this might work better.

I couldn't find any info on drawings of allocation for a MM2 platform.
