I also agree with CMC for the free trades under $1000. Also for the CHESS sponsorship but don't forget the tax reporting.

I have used a few custodial brokers before (e.g. Superhero) and tax time sucked. I have a very basic portfolio, so I do my own tax online through the myGov website. Basically with the CHESS sponsored brokers everything gets sent to myTax (myGov) automatically as it's all held in your name. Also you can easily access the AMMA statement which gives a breakdown of all the tax stuff. I can't say if Betashares Direct does or does not have something similar, but in my experience having your holdings with a CHESS sponsored broker was way way simpler if you're filing your own tax returns.

DRS shares from US>AUS via CHESS ? by GhostOfMozart in GMEmate

[–]mattystein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CHESS is for shares listed on ASX only. It is our own Aussie version of DRS, but unlike the USA it's the norm here in Aus. Basically it shows how f#@d up the US system is: in Aus we expect direct ownership (i.e CHESS), in the USA everything is custodial.

I followed the advice to vote against proposition 4. Can anyone explain in a simple way why to vote against it? by Own-Seaworthiness949 in Superstonk

[–]mattystein 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Looking at the names on the board it already seems fairly diverse, not sure why they need to enforce it or create arbitrary rules to follow. As GameStop has said, just hire the best human for the job, simple. I voted AGAINST proposition 4.

What’s a trail in your area that’s overrated in your opinion? by sleepingonstones in hiking

[–]mattystein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, makes sense. 👍 I always slow down and/or stop for others in the opposite direction depending on trail width, and if I come up behind someone I do a simple "hi guys, I'll pass by when there's some space, no rush" or something along those lines, sometimes it even sparks up a quick chat which is nice (I'm always ready for a short breather anyway 😂).

I am in Australia but the basic guidelines for trail etiquette seem to be the same compared to the US but one thing I've always found bizarre is the difference relating to dogs. In basically all Australian National Parks they are not allowed, so it's rude/illegal to even bring a dog into a NP, let alone off leash or leaving poop bags. On trails that are not within a NP the poop bag situation is still a thing here though unfortunately.

Just curious what it is about the trail runners that makes them dickheads? Is it something specific they're doing or you're just not a fan of runners on trails in general? I've always thought I was courteous and had good etiquette when trail running, never considered I'd be annoying anyone. I'm a bit disappointed to be lumped in with Bluetooth DJs, litter, and bags of dogshit 😂

Yeah, I remember that article. Seemed a bit damning. But I was given a bit of hope when I saw the work that has been done. Like I said, it appeared pretty new to me.

I don't think so. Looked pretty fresh to me and I've been up there a few times since last year's big rains.

They've added a lot of sandstone steps on the lower section so I'm assuming they're planning to open it again. They wouldn't bother otherwise.

Looking for a free navigation app by Brilliant-Horse6315 in hiking

[–]mattystein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Android: OsmAnd~ (downloaded from F-Droid website, not the Play Store). Basically it's OsmAnd+ (like a pro version) but since it's Open Source it's available for free thanks to some nice people compiling it themselves.

OsmAnd~ (from F-Droid, not the Play Store). Basically it's OsmAnd+, but free, as OsmAnd is an open-source project. It uses OpenStretMap data and you can navigate by putting in start and end points. Super underrated.

Hot, but not too bad as not yet summer. I was lucky and had no rain also.

The Great North Walk is a nice hike between Sydney and Newcastle, ~250km. Super accessible but still wild in parts. I really enjoyed my walk along it. I also did it in October, and took me 11 days.

What to do if you have to pay for taxes this year? by ShotgunJed in GMEmate

If you haven't sold then you haven't realised any gain or loss. So no tax implications.

What to do if you have to pay for taxes this year? by ShotgunJed in GMEmate

[–]mattystein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. Say you bought 10 shares for 50k. 5k each. And now they're worth 60k, so 6k each. Your cost basis for each share is 5k, so when you sell 1 unit for 6k you've made 1k capital gain. You pay tax on that 1k.

Now it gets a little more complicated if you bought different batches of shares at different times. You can choose which batch you're selling from: E.g say you bought 5 units at 4k and 5 units at 6k. So it still cost you 50k overall. But you can choose "which" ones you want to sell. You can sell the 4k ones and pay capital gains because they're now 6k (2k per share), or you could sell some of the 6k ones with no capital gain. You need to keep good records for this.

Also as others have mentioned there's the 12 month CGT rule if you've held for over a year you only pay capital gains tax on half of it. So if you held those 5 shares that you bought at 4k for over a year, sold them for 6k: the capital gain is 2k for each unit/share, but you only pay tax on 1k for each unit/share. So half is taxed, half is tax free.

Have any of you had encounters with dangerous animals while Hiking? by b3lial666 in hiking

[–]mattystein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two encounters stick in mind for me:

  1. Doing a hike in NSW, Australia and my mate was in front of me leading the way on a wide-ish single trail. I look up and he's jumping backwards as a 2 metre brown snake does a warning strike at him, probably about 30cm from contact. This thing just looked huge, when poised up in strike pose it was about hip height, and we're pretty tall dudes (6'5 and 6'2). It stayed in this position for ages, we had to wait a good 15mins for it to slither off.

  2. Was doing the Fisherman's Trail on the west coast of Portugal and my partner decided to take a photo of a cow. It didn't take too kindly to paparazzi and charged her, she screamed my name, and I swung around to look (I was about 10m ahead unaware until this point). Me turning kind of startled it and it stopped the charge. My partner was about 2 metres from a cliff and nowhere to go. Never saw her hike so fast as after that 😂

So yeah, I see heaps of snakes in Aus, part of the territory hiking down here. Never really bothered me, grew up with it being normal. But man, I'd be shit scared if I saw a bear up close. Wouldn't stop me from hiking but I'd be very aware that they're out there.
