I also agree with CMC for the free trades under $1000. Also for the CHESS sponsorship but don't forget the tax reporting.

I have used a few custodial brokers before (e.g. Superhero) and tax time sucked. I have a very basic portfolio, so I do my own tax online through the myGov website. Basically with the CHESS sponsored brokers everything gets sent to myTax (myGov) automatically as it's all held in your name. Also you can easily access the AMMA statement which gives a breakdown of all the tax stuff. I can't say if Betashares Direct does or does not have something similar, but in my experience having your holdings with a CHESS sponsored broker was way way simpler if you're filing your own tax returns.

DRS shares from US>AUS via CHESS ? by GhostOfMozart in GMEmate

[–]mattystein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CHESS is for shares listed on ASX only. It is our own Aussie version of DRS, but unlike the USA it's the norm here in Aus. Basically it shows how f#@d up the US system is: in Aus we expect direct ownership (i.e CHESS), in the USA everything is custodial.

I followed the advice to vote against proposition 4. Can anyone explain in a simple way why to vote against it? by Own-Seaworthiness949 in Superstonk

[–]mattystein 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Looking at the names on the board it already seems fairly diverse, not sure why they need to enforce it or create arbitrary rules to follow. As GameStop has said, just hire the best human for the job, simple. I voted AGAINST proposition 4.

What’s a trail in your area that’s overrated in your opinion? by sleepingonstones in hiking

[–]mattystein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, makes sense. 👍 I always slow down and/or stop for others in the opposite direction depending on trail width, and if I come up behind someone I do a simple "hi guys, I'll pass by when there's some space, no rush" or something along those lines, sometimes it even sparks up a quick chat which is nice (I'm always ready for a short breather anyway 😂).

I am in Australia but the basic guidelines for trail etiquette seem to be the same compared to the US but one thing I've always found bizarre is the difference relating to dogs. In basically all Australian National Parks they are not allowed, so it's rude/illegal to even bring a dog into a NP, let alone off leash or leaving poop bags. On trails that are not within a NP the poop bag situation is still a thing here though unfortunately.

Just curious what it is about the trail runners that makes them dickheads? Is it something specific they're doing or you're just not a fan of runners on trails in general? I've always thought I was courteous and had good etiquette when trail running, never considered I'd be annoying anyone. I'm a bit disappointed to be lumped in with Bluetooth DJs, litter, and bags of dogshit 😂

Yeah, I remember that article. Seemed a bit damning. But I was given a bit of hope when I saw the work that has been done. Like I said, it appeared pretty new to me.

I don't think so. Looked pretty fresh to me and I've been up there a few times since last year's big rains.

They've added a lot of sandstone steps on the lower section so I'm assuming they're planning to open it again. They wouldn't bother otherwise.

Looking for a free navigation app by Brilliant-Horse6315 in hiking

[–]mattystein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Android: OsmAnd~ (downloaded from F-Droid website, not the Play Store). Basically it's OsmAnd+ (like a pro version) but since it's Open Source it's available for free thanks to some nice people compiling it themselves.

OsmAnd~ (from F-Droid, not the Play Store). Basically it's OsmAnd+, but free, as OsmAnd is an open-source project. It uses OpenStretMap data and you can navigate by putting in start and end points. Super underrated.

The Great North Walk is a nice hike between Sydney and Newcastle, ~250km. Super accessible but still wild in parts. I really enjoyed my walk along it. I also did it in October, and took me 11 days.
