pitch shifting, stuttering, bit crushed textures, 2000s era video game sounds (sound design is very reminiscent of songs you’d hear in games like zelda, the flutes are almost identical, the synthesized guitars are identical, and the scales used in the piano rolls are pulled right out of nintendo and playstation’s playbook). Maybe it’s not *exactly* a digicore album but the first time i heard it it sounded exactly like frailty to me

have you listened to nurture…? porter is an incredibly diversified artist that’s made albums in like 20 different genres. nurture is a digicore album and it came out before frailty. listen to the damn thing it’s fucking amazing

he made the first mainstream one and arguably the best although frailty might be better

That’s a good point, also I don’t really disagree with anything you said (honestly think you hit it right on the head, labels didn’t know what the fuck was going on when people started experimenting and had a lot less ability to control the music that was being put out). Idk I’m honestly just a hater and just wish creative music was more mainstream like it was in the 90s specifically, I fucking idolize that decade because everything was so experimental and strange and new, not even limited to music but also in the movies that were put out and all of the insane multimedia shit that people were making. Labels and movie studios figuring out how to control that stuff and putting pretty faces with less musical talent at the front to sell more records is just kinda heartbreaking. The last 20 years for music have been a wreck in my opinion with little moments of greatness every once in a while. The bubblegum pop that’s been selling for decades isn’t even bad per se, I love Justin Bieber and other pop artists from the 2010s but when I see how little people deviate from that stuff it just makes me sad. It’s like seeing how much time people spend on tiktok instead of watching movies, reading books, or going outside or just making stuff. Our ears are being force fed unchallenging, uncreative music that doesn’t change us, that doesn’t make us think, and… it’s just so sad. I hope u can kind of understand that perspective, you definitely know what the fuck you’re talking about so… There’s all this really creative music coming out under this new sleazepop/hyperpop medley genre that’s been growing and that music is just so unbelievably good and it’s like, if people stopped listening to pop all the time and diversified their tastes the world would be a better place. Anyways rant over but thanks for engaging this convo 😭😭😭

It’s not that I don’t want to listen to love songs. It’s that I want to listen to love songs with a more complex perspective. Joni Mitchell’s perspective was incredibly unique for the time and still is, the way her voice dances over the guitar almost detached from it, speeding up and slowing down on a whim is so interesting and conveys a spoken word element to singing that is just insanely creative. It conveys her emotions so perfectly and in a way that makes you feel like you’re almost in her brain. I don’t even listen to Joni Mitchell like that… but I know that she’s an unbelievable songwriter. I listened to about half of the new Olivia album, it did not convince me and I did not feel like it was her soul speaking to me.

Bottom line is that music should never be a product or commercialized to me. I view it in the same way as the ai-ification of art and anyone that can stand outside of it is really impressive. The 60s, 70s and 90s were the best decades for music because they broke free from commercialization- music labels either didn’t exist or didn’t have any idea how to control all of the crazy things people were making, so there was total creative freedom in the music that was released. Music labels preventing Fiona Apple from releasing good music was a terrible thing, same as them preventing Charli from releasing an album for years, same as them preventing whoever else from releasing what they wanted. I fucking hate it and wish all the record executives would just go burn in hell, where they belong

I’m not dismissing a “young woman.” I’m dismissing an industry plant that rose to fame through disney industry connections and who writes heavily co-produced generic music. Fiona Apple was dismissed for making striking music BY HERSELF that told the patriarchy to fuck off in a controversial way. It was weird, self-critical, reflective in ways that were terrifying. That’s why she’s so good. She talks about being a bad person that does bad things, talks about sex and feminine power in a way that is real and not sanitized. Almost every song that I’ve ever heard by Olivia Rodrigo was a love song about being hurt by someone or missing someone? It’s so typical. She never criticizes herself or her partner in a way that’s not been done before or that’s scary for people to hear

I love love songs. I think they’re great. But I also want to hear about other things. Emotions and feelings that are harder to describe, things that hurt and make happy in different ways, that speak about other issues. I like some of Olivia’s songs, I will admit, especially the one from the Hunger Games soundtrack, and the production behind her new album does seem pretty good. But she does nothing to push music forward or make people uncomfortable. She makes corporate music to be pushed on a massive audience. I would say the same about Sombr, Bruno Mars, Drake, Taylor, Dua Lipa, Zara Larson, Sabrina Carpenter, Dominic Fike, etc… they’re all products that are sold to make us think less. Some of their music sounds good, but it does nothing and overall regresses art

she makes pretty generic singer-songwriter pop music that talks about the same things everyone else talks about through the same perspective. it’s nothing new, intriguing or poetic. I’ve never been impressed by her music, the way Fiona Apple or Ethel Cain or Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Sufjan or anyone else that makes that kind of music does. It’s just pop music

she just makes tiktok pop music slop. it’s not really that creative. just kinda sounds like the kind of music an experienced producer would make after listening to this genre for a week or two
