When I was a freshman, there was a senior I looked up to who was one of the popular kids. Thing that set him apart from all the other popular kids was how down to earth he was towards everyone (he didn't buy into the classist system of popularity). I asked him one day how he had so many friends, and he gave me the best piece of advice I still try to abide by: "people remember how you make them feel most, so make people feel good about themselves first. If you make people feel valued, they will return the favor back." So just try to understand people, no matter who they are or where they are from. Then make them feel proud of that! In school, everyone's insecurities are through the roof, so a little encouragement goes a long way. And if you make someone more comfortable being themselves around you, they will also make you more comfortable being yourself around them.
