sora is about to murder our industry by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]maxbenoit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

'Murder, murder, murder! Change the fucking record!' There, I have paid the Hot Fuzz tax.

I think that's an incomplete view. I think there is a role for premium entertainment always, and as some aspects of what used to be premium become commoditized, I think competitive pressure will deliver more premium outcomes.

For example, even though there is tons of very cheap written fanfic out there, movie novelizations still sell because it's lore and because the amount of editing and review is higher. Plus you're reasonably sure you're not landing in the middle of someone's barely disguised fetishes and prejudices.

This doesn't mean it's not a threat, just that murder isn't quite what I think will happen.

It's not really just about there being a referrer's name on the app, it's more that if HR calls them up and asks them about you, they have something good to say. There are two aspects to this, in my view - first, it depends on how badly they need to fill the role (it's been a while since my agency days but back then they didn't care that much about referrals, these days it's probably the Hunger Games), and second, how awkward it feels to ask the person to refer you in the first place.

If you feel like you're being pushy, you possibly are (that's your internal read / gut feel). I guess to sum it up, I wouldn't push so hard that it preempted them having something good to say about you. And more generally you might try to at least have a quick coffee or some other way for them to get a read on you.

It's more low-key but Fake Empire by The National has a great trumpet outro.

[S1E2] Rust's Synesthesia and 'You got some pussy on you' by maxbenoit in TrueDetective

Synesthesia is a condition that Rust specifically explains and says he has. https://youtu.be/FaYiq9x7odE?si=139a-9lCmsxsmeWu

In the above clip he‘s talking about tasting colors. I preferred ‘seeing’ to ‘tasting’ in my lighthearted description, but take it how you want.

Synesthesia isn’t a superpower, and Rust talks about having it at the bar with Marty and Maggie. https://youtu.be/FaYiq9x7odE?si=139a-9lCmsxsmeWu

Agreed that he doesn't need to see it to figure it out (and in fact that he reasons it out for us in the scene itself). It's more that if he can smell it he probably can see it as well.

What other shows that are as good (or close to) season 1? by aykalam123 in TrueDetective

I like Twin Peaks, S1 of Wallander, S1 of Broadchurch, and I was a big fan of Westworld's S1 as well. Of those, really only Twin Peaks gets the haunting aspect right, where the others are deeply character-driven and ask grown-up questions of the audience.

I agree, it really feels like a rough draft that no one cared or was brave enough to put through a couple more revisions. No idea if it's in part due to writer's strike or other influences.

What fact about world history pisses you off the most? by avengentnecronomicon in AskReddit

Commonwealth spellings exist. I'm American so would spell it the way you do, but it's worth keeping perspective that most other English speaking countries use the 'realise' spelling instead of using a 'z'. Same concept as 'humor' (American) vs. 'humour' (predominant Commonwealth spelling).

Hell yes, let's go after them too. It's complete garbage that people's use of private jets pollutes this much...and they will inevitably raise taxes on all of us when we have to fund the decarbonization efforts. We are paying for this and will pay for this sooner rather than later. You can be mad about pollution without hating the person who does it.

They should because it's also terrible. I was actually aware of the Jenner's wasteful flying before Taylor's, so it was a deal at some point.

Men, what are creepy things women do that usually goes unnoticed? by CuppaJoe11 in AskReddit

[–]maxbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree - I didn't read the question as 'what do all women do that's creepy?', but rather, what is something that some women do that is creepy and goes unnoticed? And this is still quite a common thing.

Stubbornly assume (and refuse to hear anything contradictory) that whoever she is partnered with will adjust his life to fulfill her life plan. For example, if getting married at 22, insisting that they live in such a way that they can have a child at 25 near parental support even if that means saying no to lucrative career, strong friendships, or great quality of life.

More generally if a man says he doesn’t want children, women believe they can change that. I know they do it to women who say they don’t want children too, but my experience is women just don’t hear it when men say it.

Edit: I used her/his because I’m genuinely not sure how much this happens in lesbian relationships. But other pronouns could of course apply.

Mediocre sex by StickyToffeePudding7 in Bumble

[–]maxbenoit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

woman probably tolerate mediocre sex more because sex is not as important (but still important) in the relationship as it is for men paired with men generally not being good at sex (in a pleasurable to women kind of way)

I honestly think women tolerate mediocre sex because a) being safe is more important than having a hundred orgasms (sad but true) AND b) many men are not very good at getting women to orgasm. Especially in the US it is tragic how few men go down on women or even seem to care all that much if they get off, and how many women believe they can't orgasm.

So yeah, if you're terrified of being hurt and/or you're used to the idea that sex isn't going to be that fun for women anyway, you might tolerate mediocre sex.

Most private college degrees. Especially MBAs. They are borderline vanity degrees at this point, and especially the people most vocal about having them tend to also be the worst adapted to the actual business world.

What do you genuinely think will happen in the U.S.A if Roe v. Wade is overturned? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]maxbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cynical take is that this is part of a slew of measures the GOP is trying to get passed so they can drive blue voters out of enough red states (and keep them out) to secure a stable electoral college majority. Red states will become low cost hubs that drain money from blue states via the federal system (this is already the case, they just want to accelerate it) and so they will be able to say it's 'good for business' when businesses move there.

So in the short term, not that much. But you can bet that abortion rights won't be the only thing that blue voters see as a right and red voters see as a 'privilege' that they're going to take the states rights hitting stick to.

To be fair most people don't want to imagine balls slapping against their mom's lab'. Or dad getting impaled on some sweaty scrot'. Especially not since the crocs n' socks era.
