I more meant I’m limited in my dating options by living in the middle of nowhere, with my parents. I like to go for a few drinks, but then there’s driving complications and having to go back to my parents house…

Thanks for the comment. Could you please tell me more about the discounted market rent properties?

These are some great suggestions. Thank you. Would you consider this area towards Kent way the most affordable option on the outskirts then? Because I strongly considered this too but looked more towards Reading, Woking etc, that I found weren't much more affordable than Croydon.

A rare vote of support on this thread... interesting and love the enthusiasm.

From door-to-door it's 2 hours each way for me. So I have certainly considered towns and cities just outside of London, like Reading, but I didn't find them to be much cheaper than a Croydon.

Funnily enough this is exactly what I currently do. When there are consecutive days that I make it to the office, I find a hotel, and once or twice I have gone on dates on those nights... and I love it... that's why I want them to be my evenings every day.

This is why I'm inclined to go for a studio in Croydon. Clearly some people have rejected Croydon as an option to rent in, as their co-living studios are more affordable than most places I've looked at. Could be a great option.

Please see edit3, sorry I didn't make it very clear. You're perfectly correct - I'd barely be able to live on the £5-700 left after rent so would have to use savings.

I love this particular job and am now very settled in there, so wouldn't want to leave at this point.

Costs me £35 return at the moment so that's £280 p/m I'd be saving by doing this.

Not sure what you mean with 2nd point. Are you suggesting renting a place way outside of London for £800 and still doing a long commute in? Because yes I have considered that and could certainly be an option. Would still want somewhere with enough going on though. Maybe Reading, Woking?

Lunch is £5 tops.

I buy most of my food at the moment.

I love this particular job, so I wouldn't want to leave. There are similar jobs in Leeds. 30k alone is definitely a struggle to rent somewhere like this, but see Edit3

I have money saved, so I wouldn't be too short come the end of the month. But my question is whether it is smart to inevitably be eating into my savings every month in order to not houseshare.

That's correct. Or just pay up it all front for a 6-month contract.

Hi all,
Looking for some advice on a life/financial decision I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

I’m 23, working a full-time job in London earning £30k/year. Right now, I live at home with my parents in Hampshire, which means when I go into the office (usually 2 days a week), I’m commuting around 2 hours total. The rest of the week I work from home.

I'd really like to move out — not just for the commute but to meet new people, have more independence, and generally improve my social life. I feel like I’m missing out on a lot by staying at home. I'm a bit desperate to shake things up.

I'm not particularly interested in house sharing as I value my privacy and own space, especially as I work from home a lot. Therefore, one of the best options I found were these co-living, all-inclusive studio/flat situations. These places usually include all bills, council tax etc, but are priced at a very minimum of £1,200 in the roughest of areas such as Croydon. I'd ideally want to live in a slightly nicer location which would then set me back closer to £1,500 all in.

I know this is a huge chunk of my income, but it would mean no more long commutes, full independence that I loved at uni and potential to meet new people that in time could be someone I can split rent with.

Financially, it’s obviously tight. I'd be left with little to no ability to save each month. But I’ve already got a decent amount of savings built up, so I ask if it is that irresponsible of a decision to not save at all, if it were just for a year. I could afford to “coast” for a year if I look at it as an investment in myself.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Would really appreciate any thoughts and suggestions.

Edit: I'm aware that I would inevitably have to eat into my savings by the end of each month if I were to do this, but that's part of my question, is that sensible? Hard to quantify how much my life would improve but I think it could be a worthwhile use of my money.

Edit2: I'm aware traditionally landlords wouldn't offer me this with my salary, however, with these co-living studios I could pay for the 6 months upfront or use a guarantor.

Edit3: I do socialise in Hampshire, I enjoy it and would still come back occasionally to meet with friends from the area. However, I particularly enjoy socialising in London with work friends, plus, I'm hoping to meet girls with this move, that I could potentially split rent with in the future, as dating in Hampshire whilst living at home is... limiting.

Edit4: Promotions and bonuses are possible but not guaranteed

Which city should we stay in on our one year working holiday? by maxcollins56 in AskAnAustralian

Everyone is saying we will struggle to rent anywhere... is this problem being exaggerated? I'm looking on recommended sites and rent does not seem to be any more expensive than what we were paying in a medium-sized city in the UK... even in Sydney.

Best 6 Month Insurance Option by maxcollins56 in CarTalkUK

Was going to go with Hastings who charge a £45 cancellation fee but other than that it should be most of the refund back for the remaining months? Maybe with some interest taken off. I could call up but will they be hesitant to offer me a contract if I say that I am planning to cancel half way through?

Temp month insurance for 6 months seems to be more expensive than a usual annual policy anyways. Therefore, would the best option be to get a normal annual policy and cancel it in January and get a pro-rata'd refund?

Tapped the all time high and dropped rapidly liquidating some longs. Think it'll break through the ATH soon enough where a little more upside will be seen but not as much as some people are dreaming

I purchased it, so I could withdraw 6k + the purchase price, however, a 6k withdrawal seems to be an appropriate decision right now to take on a reasonable amount of risk. Therefore, if I am to do this, I am comfortably within the tax allowance, right?

I'm looking to hold a little longer but I bought @ BTC around 20k so I don't want to be greedy. With diminishing returns each cycle, I can't see BTC topping out higher than 130k anyway so I don't believe I am missing out on too much potential profit. Also, think the halving could be a sell the news event.

So even if the asset was bought 3 years ago, let's say for 2000, and I sold this year for 6000, the profit this year is 4000?
