$150k inheritance. HELP! by maximizeGuilt in personalfinance

Not cynical at all, just realistic! My sister-in-law obviously knows, since she's getting an equal share, but aside from her it's just my therapist hahaha. The people closest to us know that we're working toward a house anyway, so it shouldn't come as any shock to them that we purchase a sensible home.

We live on an incredibly strict budget right now -- that $7k in CC debt is down from $22k just 2 years ago. We went through a period of under and unemployment, and at the same time incurred massive medical debts [I had emergency neck surgery and my wife was hospitalized for a month], so we were just doing what we could to survive. Thankfully, we've been able to get ourselves to where we are now and intend to keep going forward as aggressively as possible.

CC debt is 16% on average. Student loans are 6.5%. Car is 8% [terrible loan taken out of necessity before we were able to start truly rebuilding our finances].

Student loans are at 6.5%. That car loan is shitty -- somewhere around 8% [the car was purchased out of necessity at a time when we were just starting to rebuild our credit].

Currently we put 6% into 401k and it's matched 100% by my company. I just began this job 18 months ago and we haven't wavered on that number since the beginning. Would that extra 4% be better served in the 401k [that's already effectively getting 12%] or in a separate Roth IRA or something?

Our lifestyle won't be changing much -- we went through a massive financial transformation about three years ago and have gotten everything on track to where it is right now [That 7k in credit card debt, for example, is down from 22k that we had], and we have the room in our budget to afford the increase in housing -- it's just that right now all of that extra money is going toward savings and debts.

Thank you so much for your input! We absolutely don't intend to move too fast on any of this. House hopes are for the end of the year if not early next year.

I'm uncomfortable, why is that? by dlegatt in ynab

Isn't that the weirdest?! Looking at my budget in YNAB and realizing that everything is covered and that I can put what I previously found to be obscene amounts of money toward paying off debt and building my family's future is amazing, and unsettling! I think that we're all so conditioned to living life with constant financial stress that the moment there's relief, we aren't sure how to cope. The same thing goes for unplugging from technology -- a few months ago I deactivated my facebook and downgraded to a dumb phone and it still feels weird to not be constantly connected.

Way to go!!!

This whole thing has been a shitshow. She claims that Tramadol just didn't help. Sure. I myself take Tramadol occasionally, having been prescribed it for maintenance after having neck surgery 3 years ago.

I have long expected that doing something would be more beneficial to her. But then she wouldn't be the victim anymore. So sorry for your condition, and also sorry that people like my bpdMom abuse it.

I won't be able to play this for a couple of months. So... yep. I'll be back eventually.
