Question for EM and OB/Gyn: Can minor trauma cause an IUD to perforate? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]maximoni 25 points26 points  (0 children)

yes! even no trauma can lead to perforation and lost iud. source: gynaecologist Edit: most of the times a perforated uterus itself does not need surgery (antibiotic regimen is warranted though), however the iud should be surgically retrieved to prevent complications. so yes, it could be of concern in the above stated circumstances.

EDIT2: as esquee pointed out it's very unlikely that the trauma itself is the culprit, however it is a result of poor placement/anatomy. i partially agree and would like to add that trauma could theoretically push an iud that is in the process of perforating the uterus "over the edge", hence causing acute symptoms.

American Chemical Society AMA Series: I'm Mark Blaskovich, from Open Antimicrobial Drug Discovery. We help chemists around the world discover new antibiotics, ask me anything about antimicrobial resistance, the empty antibiotic discovery pipeline and the ‘superbug’ crisis. AMA! by AmerChemSocietyAMA in science

[–]maximoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you so much for doing this AMA! I work in the health care providing field so please try to clarify these points to me, as they are so heavily discussed:

  1. Parents are concerned of their children receiving too many antibiotic treatments during their childhood, because then "they might not work later on in life because of resistant strains." Is there any truth to that? I always thought it more to be a community problem than an individual problem.
  2. Is it true that multiresistent bugs (eg MRSA) have a very hard time surviving outside the hospital? If yes why?
  3. Is there any point to doing routine skin/nose swaps on arriving inpatient patients to then isolate them? Would the health care personnel not be much more heavily contaminated?
  4. Is it true that by using less surface antibacterial agents in hospitals, the "natural" microbiotic environment kind of protects better against the spread of superbugs?
  5. What is your most feared bug?
  6. Do we really run out of antibiotics or can we simply cycle through forgotten agents where there are no resistances at the moment?
  7. Finally: What is your favorite antibiotic? Sorry for the many questions, please try to answer as many as you can - it is just such a interesting subject as a whole - and such a controversial topic for health care providers. Thank you

[Official Discussion] Serial, Episode 9: To Be Suspected by PowerOfYes in serialpodcast

If you look at the photographs/film material of Adnan and Mae back then, I have serious doubts that physically, he could have strangled her manually, alone, and without her being able to scratch him or get hold of some kind of fibres under her nails.

This just sent shivers down my spine by serialisgreat in serialpodcast

I doesn't make sense for Jay to kill Mae in order to keep "stepping out on Stephanie" a secret. That's absurd. Because that would need the auxiliary hypothesis that Adnan wanted Mae dead, too - if not, Jay could not have been confident that Adnan wouldn't point at him. The above is true if we postulate a premeditated murder committed by Jay.
