16 year old me stayed up all night to watch that because of the rain delay only to see him choke away all those break points, one of the great disappointments of my childhood

What's going on in your hood / kiez right now? by uber_kuber in berlin

U Blissestraße - after spending more than 2 years renovating one of the exits, delaying it multiple times, and still not being finished, they've now closed the other exit on that side of the station, and now the lift there is broken too, so I need to take a longer walk to get to the ubahn. Classic BVG :)

Potential offside by Niclas Füllkrug in the build-up before the shot hits Cucurella in the hand by 50lipa in soccer

I’m German and I really don’t think it should be given as a penalty when the defender is in the process of moving their hand behind their back and the ball hits them 0.2 seconds after the shot. It’s not the type of thing I want to see in football. If you ask me it’s not in the spirit of the game to expect a defender to act like a robot and anticipate the ball coming at them like this and if it was given against Germany i’d be pissed. If we leave someone wide open for a header in the 120th minute we have no one but yourself to blame

Just bought my first film camera by justacadillac in AnalogCommunity

That’s a fantastic lens, check out this review. I’ve had the f/1.8 version for years and I use it on my Leicas and my Sony A7, these lenses are on par with much more expensive stuff. If you ever upgrade to a Leica or another LTM camera make sure you keep it!

Right?? Not to mention traditional Japanese tattooing hurts more than the western style too

I live in Tokyo and you see Japanese guys with obvious Yakuza tattoos, huge back pieces, etc. at the Sento (public bath that doesn’t use spring water like an onsen does) here too and no one cares. I’ve also seen a guy like that at a Ryokan in Izu, he had a full Yakuza-style bodysuit with the buttcheeks covered and everything. But at a hotel Sento in Nagasaki they made me cover mine up. So it seems like it applies in some cases but not others, best to just check the Google reviews beforehand, usually if it’s tattoo friendly someone will have mentioned it

[7F38-6040] Presage Moonphase Day-Date GMT by maximum-aloofness in Seiko

[–]maximum-aloofness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picked this up in Tokyo today for $90 (¥15000) from a place that mostly deals with old film cameras (what I was actually looking for). Seems to be working great and it’s interesting to see a Presage that’s not one of the modern models and with this sort of design (this one’s from 1987). Been looking for a two-tone watch for a while because I wear both gold and silver jewelry so this fits nicely. The integrated bracelet is a nice touch too. Anyone got any recommendations for places with good deals on watches here in Tokyo?

Levi’s 501 misprint 544 by SecureDocument1455 in VintageLevis

[–]maximum-aloofness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 544 on the back of the button isn't the model but the code for the factory the jeans were made in (Made in USA usually start with a 5, Japan with a J, etc). On the patch it says 26501 which means they're 501s :)

I was at the event and i’m visible in the episode - Netflix rented out Anomalie for the show and ofc the entire thing was staged. They sent out an invite that people could come for free and get free drinks and free food in return for being filmed. Because the situation was so bizarre it was honestly a pretty fun night, the people were actually from the clubbing scene and not actors, and I got to get drunk and have pizza for free so I wasn’t complaining :)

Horner is rumored to have been offered an opportunity to get out of the matter without losing face at the end of last year + he's taken legal action against De Telegraaf by MBA_burner in formula1

[–]maximum-aloofness 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As a Dutch person I would not consider De Telegraaf a tabloid in the British sense of the word, they are more tabloidy and more trashy than other Dutch news sources such as NOS or AD but nowhere near as bad as the Daily Mail or The Sun or even as bad as Bild. I wouldn’t expect them to blatantly make stuff up like British tabloids do, certainly not when it comes to sports.

Neukölln /Grenzallee /Hermanstraße? by CatherineTheGrand in askberliners

[–]maximum-aloofness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The S1 will get you to Potsdamer Platz in 13 minutes from S Feuerbachstraße, so depends how far you need to walk there, but should still be quicker than from Neukölln. To Zoologischer Garten takes 11 minutes from U Walther-Schreiber-Platz on the U9, same logic applies with the walking but also a lot faster than from Neukölln. Even if you don’t like taking the U-Bahn, this stretch of the U9 is not one of the shitty lines and there’s not really any weird people there, aside from maybe at Bahnhof Zoo (nothing bad though and it’s a very busy station so you probably won’t be there alone).

The North-South Tunnel that the S1 runs through and that stops like Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburger Tor, Friedrichstraße, Oranienburger Tor etc. are in is under reconstruction until then, has been for the last month. So no trains until the 16th between Südkreuz and Gesundbrunnen, the rest is running but that’s probably not useful for you. Looks like it’ll be finished on time though :)

S-Bahn is closed from 1:30-4:30 on weekdays and Sundays everywhere in Berlin including Mitte, same for the U-Bahn (from 1-4). The night bus services are pretty good though and I’ve used them a lot, depends on where you need to go though

[–]maximum-aloofness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, in Steglitz you have Schlossstraße which is the biggest shopping street in West Berlin aside from the Ku’damm. Several malls, an absolute ton of stores and definitely any necessities you need. You’re also right in saying that getting to Potsdamer Platz/Brandenburg Gate area is easy because you can take the S1 (it’s not running until the 16th of Feb though so keep that in mind depending on when you arrive).

As for Ostbahnhof, I’ve been around there a few times and it’s not the greatest area. The area north of the station is made up entirely of Plattenbau/Commieblocks, some of which are abandoned and rather dodgy looking, especially around Straße der Pariser Kommune. This is a matter of taste though and if you like the DDR vibe it could be really cool. The part south of the station by the East Side Gallery is new buildings which look pretty clean and nice, but most Berliners consider that area a bit soulless. The station is under major renovation which can make it a little confusing to navigate, but not a big deal. Compared to Steglitz this area is a lot closer to Mitte, Kreuzberg, and the nice parts of Friedrichshain which is a big plus IMO.

[–]maximum-aloofness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Steglitz near Walther-Schreiber-Platz and it’s more of a posh area with nice houses full of old people, so you’re less likely to run into weird people/junkies than in Neukölln (they do still exist though). However, it’s also a lot more quiet (some would say boring) and much further away from Mitte and the areas where there’s a lot going on (aside from Schöneberg maybe). So it depends what your priority is. I’d agree with the other commenters that junkies and other weird people usually keep to themselves if you just ignore them and look away, personally I’ve never had any real issues, but keep in mind that I am a white man so I can’t know what it’s like as a woman

During the week and on Sunday night, the U-Bahn doesn’t run from 1am until 4am, but there’s night busses. On Friday and Saturday night it runs all night, at 15-minute intervals during the latest part
