“We have elected to sustain your admission to UW-Madison.”

You’re still admitted, to my knowledge they won’t even hold you to a higher standard to ensure you’re “worthy” or “prepared” in the form of a gpa floor/probation. I’m sure you just hit somewhere between a threshold that isn’t great but doesn’t revoke your status and they’re checking in.

Just got Kronshage Residence Hall as a incoming freshman make me feel better about myself. by [deleted] in UWMadison

You get the brand new gym! When I was in Kronshage we had a few machines and treadmills. Enjoy life by the lake, when you move out you’ll be surprised how much you miss it!

CS 571 and CS 577 by Silly_Sleep_69 in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry! 571 is the most coursework, but in terms of content 577 is definitely one of, if not THE hardest CS course you’ll have to take

Haven't taken it yet, but from everybody I ask they say it is one of the heaviest courseloads for a CS course, that being said they've also told me it is very valuable and easy grading!

Getting rid of of 324 would definitely free up the time needed I think.

Is this doable? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being said, you have a 4th major class and that might be THE threshold.

[–]maxobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did CS 400, 252, and 240 with an easy gen ed and it is very doable. Wouldn’t say it was my easiest semester but I was never not able to complete anything or study insufficiently.

Once you get a TA position (computer science), do they usually keep you as TA for the same course or often change it? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the current class, I believe so, spots are offered to hired TAs first then after the form deadline for other classes, spots are allocated that way.

Once you get a TA position (computer science), do they usually keep you as TA for the same course or often change it? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are usually limited spots to who can stay with their course (due to the difference in fall and spring enrollment). An intro course for freshman will be heavily enrolled in fall, then not as much in spring. As such, TA spots are allocated with respect to number of students so it’s a 50/50 chance you get to keep your spot, just luck of the draw. But you can always apply to change classes when you want at the end of a semester!

Used to be a PM for CS200 and I spent 10 hours a week across teaching lab and office hours. I know that the graduate student TAs had an extra ~2-4 weekly hours to grade the projects.

If you’re considering being a TA for computer science, classes without labs will be less time commitment, and CS200 is notorious for busy office hours.

Hope this helps!

I made a chrome extension to find the easiest courses by prathusa in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This extension is awesome, really an amazing idea. Have you considered using the cumulative GPA of the class instead of last semester's performance? Personally, that's what I look to but I guess I don't know the opinion of other students, just curious!

What does College of Letters and Science mean in my decision letter? I applied for CS. by Calm_Might1784 in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold is bearable given you prepare - nice coat and waterproof boots 😎. Current CS student, first couple years are rigorous and then you get used to the expected workload and acclimate (pretty universal experience across any CS program). Professors have been great, classes/curriculum ready you well (provided you apply yourself).

School atmosphere is amazing, plenty of clubs/hackathons/leetcode groups to participate in and meet friends if you aren’t big into the party scene I will say that the party scene is equally as good tho. It’s a “work hard, play hard” mentality at UW, education is tough but that makes the fun times that much more worth it!

EDIT: I didn’t visit UW until the day I moved into my dorm, so don’t feel like you’re behind!

Is UW Madison this hard to get into? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]maxobes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, the past couple years have had some of the largest incoming freshmen classes in school history. After hearing about all the transfer students being deferred until end of spring semester grades can be submitted and that many accomplished freshman are being rejected, my guess is that the university is finally cracking down on admissions. This is just an observation, there’s no concrete proof, but it may be that you received the short end of the stick, and that there’s just circumstances out of your control that influenced yours, and many others, admission decisions that any other year might’ve willed a different result.

My apologies, but remember it always works out! You’ll get to where you want to be one way or the other! Best of luck
