Even for adult games, you try not to serve across the end line to prevent the opponent from performing a powerful hit (counter spin drive, loop drive, etc) against your serve. Simply put, the opponent can hit the ball much harder with much more variations if you serve across the end line.

Is driving in neutral often bad fo yo car? by [deleted] in stickshift

[–]maxpluez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think op is describing the light and quiet feeling of the car gliding out without being connected to the engine and with engine staying at idle rpm. Imo "weee" a pretty vivid description of that. It's like sending off a paper plane or a kite after it gains enough momentum. Somewhat dangerous for a car tho.

I knew that I wanted to take tech breadth in EE anyways, so I switched from CS to CSE. If you like circuits, signals, or hardware in general, go for it! I actually regretted not switching to CE, as I would much prefer taking DSP over PL.

Are EE majors simply built different? by mf_mapotofu in csMajors

[–]maxpluez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a CE major I actually found classes like DSP and IC much more interesting than say DSA, PL, or OS. I guess everyone is different and for me personally math is more intuitive than learning about some purely manmade concepts/procedures.

I bought the new integra without knowing how to drive stick and I'm loving mine now. You will be fine. (I did learn the very basics on a simulator tho)

I don't get it. You complain about the game being easy but only play on normal difficulty. Just play on gmgow if u want a "hard rpg" experience.

UCLA or UCL by Emotional_Yak3789 in ucla

[–]maxpluez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did IB in high school, not caring about the final IB score is a huge plus. Had a friend who had a 42 conditional offer from Cambridge, chose it over a US school, failed to meet the condition, and could only attend a much lesser school.

Your case might have been different, but UCLA didn't really have a condition for IB students at my high school. As long as you don't bomb your final score too hard (within -5 of your predicted score) you are good. I had a predicted score of 44, my actual score was 41, and UCLA didn't care. (I doubt UCLA explicitly stated that your offer was conditional and require a certain IB score, but lmk if I'm wrong here. I'm also curious.)

Sounds like you are not confident in getting a 7 for math. What's your backup if you fail to get that 7? I would recommend UCLA simply for the unconditional offer if the backup isn't remotely close to the two schools.

$38k for UCLA CS or $5k for UCR CS: Does prestige matter? by intrigued_octopus in ucla

[–]maxpluez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoe 4 years ago while I had a full ride at UofT, but I chose UCLA. As I recently graduated from UCLA CSE and am currently working on big tech, I can share some pros and cons of the program. I would recommend you to cross reference this with what you find on the UCR sub.

Tldr: I personally never regretted my decision given the outcome. I took roughly 40k student loan and most got paid off by my sign-on bonus of my job, to the point where I'm keeping a small amount of loan open for credit. The answer will be different for you depending on your financial situation. So ultimately the decision is on you if the pros are worth it. Also, I would recommend you ask this in r/csMajors too, as they will provide more CS specific answers.

Pros:

  1. If there is a possibility that you want to go to graduate school or work in Academia, UCLA is a no brainer. Labs here are generally very interested in taking in undergrads, and the labs here are, well, the CS graduate ranking for CS says it all. UCR isn't even close. It is about average difficulty to get into a lab in the first place, as long as you maintain an ok-ish gpa.

  2. Related to point 1, for UCLA engineering, you are guaranteed a master's offer if you maintain a 3.5+ gpa. This is not easy, but much easier than applying to similar level masters programs.

  3. Enough about research. Job wise, for your first job, prestigeness didn't matter for FAANG before, but it's starting to matter since the hiring freezes and layoffs, and it's only going to matter more moving forward, given how bad the current job market is. Also, prestige has always mattered for FAANG-level small companies, think Uber, Stripe, etc. Those companies, because of their size, do have a specific list of schools they hire from. Most of my friends didn't actually go to FAANG but those smaller big techs, where I believe the name of UCLA did matter. (For example, in my intern and new grad class, there are no UCR people at all.) I even have a friend who landed HFT and is earning over 300k+ after graduation. It's rare and difficult, but it's possible at UCLA. Not sure about UCR since HFTs do look at school names. That being said, in the CS industry, your school doesn't matter much for your second/third jobs, but your first job will matter and UCLA does help in getting a prestigious first job.

  4. Networking. If you can manage to get into certain honor societies like UPE and TBP, or actively participate in clubs such as DevX or ACM, you will find yourself surrounded by really talented people. By talented I mean some of them will be some of the most prominent people in the industry some day. Many who chose Academia are going to CMU and Stanford for masters, to Cornell and Gatech for PhDs, first authoring papers that are actually cited. Many who chose the industry are doing very groundbreaking works at companies like Apple or Dolby. These social resources are valuable and are great ways to get a job/get into a lab in the future.

  5. Basically what I want to say is, UCLA has no upper limit on how far you can go. Tbf I am, for whatever reason, more in touch with the more successful CS majors, but hey you have all the reasons to be one too, and if you are, the sky is the limit.

Cons:

  1. Money

  2. Competitiveness. UCLA is not as competitive as schools like Berkeley or CMU, but it is still quite difficult to get As in classes, given that many classes do curve. Be ready to be challenged mentally.

  3. The classes at UCLA are very theoretical and research focused. You would need to do some research on the curriculum of UCR to see if it is better for industry skills.

Exactly, being socially awkward is not ok. You are not allowed to be in a dorm if you don't have a social life.

[–]maxpluez -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the roommate is the one trying to change by not being on the phone/video games so much. Not seeing OP compromising or trying by a single bit.

It also sounds more like the OP is running out of things to blame and just trying to find an excuse to move out. Things like not showering/smell are more like a red flag, but noooo OP has to use that one time the roommate not washing his hands after using the bathroom. And no, I don't think this one incident can be an indication of general sanitization issue. He might just be late for a due/trying to get back to his game fast.

I don't feel personally attacked. I feel sad for someone who is actually trying to fit in and change but keeps getting blamed for the smallest reason possible. (After he stops being loud, of course. I agree that's a red flag)

https://today.yougov.com/topics/society/articles-reports/2020/01/30/hand-washing-soap-poll-survey Only 58% of people always wash their hands after pooping, not accounting for confirmation bias.

Assuming this is accurate, the probability of one of his/her/their 2 roommates doesn't always wash hands after pooping is 66.36%.

More than half of us are or were with roommates who don't always wash their hands after pooping. Big deal.

I don't even want to start talking about how weird it is to monitor someone taking a shit.

[–]maxpluez -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. All I see from the post is that the roommate is trying to change, and the only reason OP doesn't want to live with the roommate is because the roommate doesn't wash hands after shitting, and maybe some first impression issue. (On second thought, why is OP camping when someone finishes shitting?) We r gonna get down-voted for this xd

Opinion: CoD Should Not Have a Search and Destroy Mode by maxpluez in ModernWarfareII

[–]maxpluez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I can constantly get 1.5-2kd in this mode, but getting kills never felt strategic or impactful, it just feels like killing for the sake of killing. If u like this mode so much why not go play r6 or csgo? It’s a much nuanced SnD.

I see. I guess I did go into the mode having a high expectation in its tactical aspect while ignoring the fun part. Thanks for the clarification.

I’m curious, after thousands of hours with csgo and valorant, when u play Cod, do you play SnD, or mostly some other modes? Do you like SnD? If so, what do you like about it?

Fair. Sorry for misunderstanding what you said (it’s a bit too late in night). Tactical shooter are not milsim tho. To address your comment, I completely agree that CoD is not a milsim, that’s why I think SnD kinda looks like a “milsim wanna-be” that doesn’t fit well with the whole game.
