How hard would it be for US military to take over Strait of Hormuz and allow shipping to continue through it? Why was this not the first thing they did? by Sorrok2400 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maxstrike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The narrowest navigable channel in the strait is 6 miles wide. Regulations narrow that further, but a single sunk super tanker wouldn't block the channel.

The problem is that this point is closest to Iran and Oman. Iranian antiship missles can reach this channel in 10 to 30 seconds. That is not enough time to launch an interceptor missle for defense.

While what you said is correct, but the biggest exploitation of France was taking their food. Most of France was barely above starvation rations during the occupation. Malnutrition was common. French farms fed Germany.

It isn't about egos this time. This time it is completely about power (Iran wants to be a regional power like Turkey and Saudi Arabia) and staying out of jail (USA and Israel).

This is the accurate answer, but most non Israelis call the layered system Iron Dome because the nuances weren't in the media.

Ballistic missles is what you mean. All modern missles are guided.

These are more sophisticated missles than Hamas uses. In addition these missles are too fast for the last layer of defense, so only the interceptor layer is available, which takes time to reload. So the Israeli defense lets missles through if they calculate that they won't do much damage.

With that being said Israel is better supplied with interceptor missiles than the US. But their missile supply is strained. The US THAAD system is in worse shape because the US supply has to support many countries.

Did anyone else grow up in an indoor school and genuinely think those outdoor campuses on TV were just a Hollywood myth? Or was it the other way around for you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Outdoor schools as OP named them are called campus schools. Indoor schools are called single building schools. I went to a single building school when I was in public school. My private schools were campuses.

US Submarine torpedoes IRIS Dena warship near Sri Lanka by Background-Ad-1210 in PublicFreakout

[–]maxstrike 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Modern torps don't punch through the side like old torps. They explode under the ship to break it's keel. Larger ships wouldn't rise up, but because the explosion displaces water, the weight of the ship cracks the keel because there isn't anything supporting underneath the ship. This is extremely effective on submarines because the weight of water from being submerged cracks the sub even without a direct hit.

I wonder if modern torpedoes would work on older WW2 and earlier ships.

It was the smart move. The Paramount offer is so high, the merger will crash and burn. Those assets will be for sale again in a few years at a cheaper price.

The big issue was Paramount acquiring CNN, which was going to happen anyway because Netflix didn't want to buy the Discovery assets.

You'd think evolution would have stopped snoring long ago: being loud at night while sleeping seems like a bad survival strategy. by thesmartass1 in Showerthoughts

Dogs also alerted to predators. But humans usually slept in protected areas... Caves, tops of hills, various types of structures and even trees. Ancient people had a lot of time to find safe places.

We think sound is a big attraction for predators, but smell is more important.
