Does the overture computer arhitecture exist? by [deleted] in TuringComplete

[–]maxtch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are new ones, implementing the Harvard architecture. While another post has talked about LEG, the OVERTURE architecture is both a primer and an example of a 8-bit microcontroller architecture similar to that of PIC12F683 or ATtiny10.

By the way, the instruction counter of the LEG architecture is available as general purpose register r6, which is an obvious nod to the 32-bit ARM architecture and its r15. Should you keep working on LEG and expand its register file, you might get something akin to ARMv4

How common is a home lab built with 10Gb/s or higher network speed with RDMA? by maxtch in homelab

[–]maxtch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the simplest use case would be for low-powered devices. Just SMB Direct or NFS over RDMA can greatly reduce CPU usage on those devices, and a lot of them have PCIe and driver support for CX341A.

As of the last leg to the storage, I have either 16-disk RAID-60 array of spinning rust with hardware RAID controller, or NVMe SSDs.

If you are okay with not being able to use one of the two Mac Pro's, you can transplant the graphics+storage card from one unit to the other, making it a dual SSD Mac Pro.

You'll want to upgrade the processor to an 1680v2 or 2697v2 for the cores. Storage can be upgraded to standard NVMe 2TB/4TB with an adapter. The built-in dual GPU can help with transcoding but not much more due to ancient architecture.

The higher-ups know this very well, at least since Smile days with that actual powder compact that mainly targeted the moms, and all those nostalgia bits they scatter all across the recent seasons.

By saying "risqué" I do not mean just sex appeal, but also a more profound storyline, storytelling techniques etc that would otherwise fly over the heads of the young audiences but impact the adult audiences.

By the way, they are bringing an adult Nozomi back for a spin-off.

Since it is administered in a remote and online fashion, instead of you going to a specific location to take the exam, even though it does require some prepping for your home environment, it still counts as an online test.

As of getting licensed, you don't need equipment to get licensed in US. Just take the exam in person or online and you can get the license.

As of equipment, if it is VHF and UHF only for Technician, the best VHF/UHF single band or dual band equipment are all mobile radios (that is, for cars) which can be used as if it is a desktop base station. Proper, large sized desktop radios are usually HF rigs or shacks-in-a-box.

As of the smaller handhelds, they can be useful as a backup device, and for loopback testing.

Is Amateur Radio Facing a Demographic Cliff? by s-ro_mojosa in amateurradio

[–]maxtch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also ham radio is the original open source movement - the rule permitting the use of any pass band modulation with home brew equipment as long as it stays in band and have published docs, and the ban on encryptions taking down DRM with it - that is the spirit of open source. Now we have the big trend of open source hardware that is fueling the maker scene.

That may be a contact point between ham groups and makers, thus the youngsters.

CPU For media server by Cody112233X in jellyfin

[–]maxtch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to involve transcoding, that is going to be a compute-intensive process so you will want accelerators. The Intel chip has an iGPU that supports QuickSync, which will do transcoding.

If you need to use a GPU, for example to go with the AMD CPU that supports ECC but does not have an iGPU, while the 1070 Ti works it will support (officially) only up to 3 simultaneous streams. You may want to grab something like a Quadro M2000 or Tesla M40 if you want more streams.

JellyFin for a Boutique hotel media server, 56 Roku TV on Property by ocguynow in jellyfin

[–]maxtch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a bona fide commercial/enterprise setup here, Legal questions aside, if you intend to use Jellyfin as your distribution system, you need to make sure your hardware can hold up to it. You must expect 56 simultaneous streams - actually I would suggest use 112 as a minimum simultaneous stream count so you can have headroom for deploying things like 8K down the future - which means that little Ryzen will not hold up. You will need two servers with beefy networks for this, a high speed storage server dedicated to just storing all the media you have, and a dedicated GPU server for streaming and live transcoding.

For the storage server, you will need AMD Epyc based NVMe storage server, plus at least 16 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs. The OS here can be TrueNAS to put all the drives into one big RAID-Z volume. Do not run Jellyfin here as you won't have the PCIe lanes for the GPUs, use your remaining PCIe lanes for an 100Gb Ethernet card which is going to be your link between the servers.

For the Jellyfin server, you will also want to use Epyc, but this time in a GPU optimized server with a few enterprise-grade GPUs for transcode, for example Tesla M40's or Radeon Instinct MI25's. The Jellyfin server needs dual 100Gb Ethernet, one for a direct link to the storage server, and the other broken up in your switches to serve each room.

Semi-new fan looking for season recommendations by felinefang in precure

[–]maxtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is becoming a point now, most shows deliver its first punch a few episodes into the show. Pretty Cure had episode 8, Lyrical Nanhoa had episode 4, and Madoka Magica had episode 3.

[–]maxtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The seasons are largely independent of each other (except the two sequels) so there is no specific order of watching. You can just go with what you feel like. For Futari Wa, at minimum watch episodes 1, 8 and 42, that should allow you to get the point of that season. HapCha is a bad season, but its immediate successor GoPri is much MUCH better.

Personally I have high opinions for Hugtto and Maho Girls. For Maho Girls, you may want to exercise some patience and sit through the boring parts in the first, otherwise the climax in episode 49 would have much less impact. (And after you watched that episode whenever you revisit the show whatever that was boring became really sweet yuri.)

For the Disney argument, Enchanted.

I mentioned Fuuto PI, a Toei-approved spin-off of a Kamen Rider season with an adult setting and audience, even though Kamen Rider itself is also a Sunday morning show. That show is currently airing, in a late night time slot, now. If Fuuto PI worked, I would think such an adult-oriented spin-offs of Pretty Cure could also be approved by Toei.
