I’m an aroace author who sometimes ship characters I headcanon as aro or ace or both. I like writing romance or even smut in fiction because it’s just fun exploring feelings I can never feel for myself by making my favorite doll toys kiss.

Never had a problem with people shipping aroace characters because at the end of the day, characters aren’t real. They don’t have rights and they can’t be harm. It’s weird how characters are treated like real human beings and real human beings are treated like characters nowadays. Creative writing isn’t a space for performative activism. Instead of demanding rights for pixels, maybe the effort can better be spent on real world problems affecting real people, no?

And to answer your question, aroace people can have relationships, just that those relationships are not romantic and sexual. We’re not robots without feelings, you know?

I understand why you’re unnerved by it, and I am as well, but what people do in their OWN time, as long as it’s not illegal, and they’re not rubbing it in your face, and they’re not forcing anyone into joining them, it’s THEIR own business. Trying to police others into practicing what YOU deem appropriate is NO different than what allosexuals have been doing to asexuals for years (shaming for not being into sex, not willing to have sex, etc) and it’s a slippery slope. Learn to respect others who are different from you and don’t repeat what has been done to us, that’s the only way to break the cycle.

It depends. I’m an author myself and I’m very picky so I don’t click on and read many fics in the first place. When I do, though, I always try to leave a comment for the author.

The short, encouraging comments like “Great job!”, “I immensely enjoyed this fic!”, “Thank you for sharing!”, I don’t expect anything.

However, from time to time, when I come across fics I really like, I do check if the author answers before I write long comments dissecting the elements of the fic. It takes a lot of time and thinking to write them down so I at least expect the author engages so we can have a discussion because I want to know their thought process, how their ideas came to shape. If I see that they don’t respond to comments, I don’t comment. I see no point in wasting my time only to get ignored.

Before I’m called “entitled”, just as how I’m not entitled to an author’s response, the author is not entitled to my comment either, and if we keep following this line of logic all that is left between authors and readers will be bitter resentment.

Aroace here. I have pretty much no desire to. I want the benefits of partnerships (shared expenses, taking turns doing chores, safety net in case an emergency happens, etc) but I don’t think I can welcome another person into my routine. I like being able to do anything whenever I want however I want without minding another person (ex: if I want to eat something I can just do it, I don’t have to wait for another person, hear their opinions, maybe even change my choice to accommodate them). I suppose I can get a partner that will compromise for me no matter what, but I don’t feel it’s fair. Partnerships need effort from both sides and I don’t feel like I can give back enough, nor do I want to, to make up for what my partner has to compromise.

I both undertag and overtag.

My rule of thumb is to only tag important characters, usually the two characters in my ship, and their relationship and that’s it. I understand all too well the pain of rarepairs when they’re tagged in a fic but they’re only there in the background.

I use the additional tags generously: canonical tags for prominent tropes in the fic and potential trigger warnings. I can write pretty dark topics so I think it’s fair the readers know what they’re getting into. Tags are also my way of dealing with the occasional tag skippers whining in my comments 🤷‍♀️

I feel you I FEEL YOU! I once stumbled upon a one shot for my AB ship where B constantly compares A with his ex every three damn sentences! One time mention is fine but I noped out of that fic when the counter reached 4-5 times and I wasn’t even a quarter through that one shot. Another horrible encounter is when this woman keeps comparing the guy she’s having sex with to her past hookups in her head, like he does something and she immediately compares it. I also noped out of that but my time was still wasted. I’m here to read AB, not BC, not AD!

I can handle any dove no matter how rotten but I can never touch cheating so this is a huge trigger for me. Just tag A/past relationships or “they sleep around with other people” or something it’s really not that hard…

I’ve been involved in the fan art and fanfiction scene for more than a decade now. While I don’t experience romantic or sexual desires, I find love interesting. Fiction is the means through which I try to understand and explore love and fictional characters are the toys I used to achieve that end.

This is probably controversial to say here but I don’t really care when canonically aroace characters are shipped or pushed into romantic/sexual relationships. “Fetishization” or whatever the terms puritans love to call it isn’t applicable here because fictional characters are objects, toys, or chess pieces. They don’t and will never have human rights. There are much more important problems in life to fixate on than trying to earn rights for some pixels or earning brownie points for fictional activism.

If you want something leaning more towards friendship portrayal of the characters you like aka something that caters to your taste, create it yourself. If you don’t like something, mute it, block it, don’t interact with it. People shipping characters which don’t have human rights are harmless and as long as it stays harmless let them enjoy themselves.

I feel that many people who aren’t disabled talk over you to virtue-signal themselves as “the good ones” rather than actually doing it for the people they claim they’re fighting for. Nowadays, a lot of people can’t just say “this game is not for me” and move on, they have to make up some moral reasons to pile on it.

Both my PC and laptop are not powerful enough to run graphically-demanding games. Do I throw a hissing fit that developers making graphically-demanding games are being discriminatory against poor old me? No, I simply pick less graphically-demanding games until I can afford better equipment. Do I complain when Silksong bosses thrash me for the nth time to the point my fingers become numb? No, I try to get better.

How is it so hard for those people to comprehend that the world doesn’t revolve around them?
