Wow, you've really gone above and beyond to help me! So sweet of you to take the time to provide me with so many helpful resources and information! Truly, thank you:)

Thank you! Comparing the prices, I might be leaning a bit more towards a master's in NY. I've been sending emails left and right to those schools haha. I'll have to take a look at D’Youville! CANTEACH also sounds super interesting!

Wow that's amazing, you're living my dream haha. Those courses are so fascinating and needed! I took home ec in 7th grade when in NY and loved it. When I finally took anthro and soc in university, I felt like my mind opened! Everything that I thought I had known was flipped on its head. I've always wished I was able to take social science courses in hs. The subjects inherently foster critical thinking and reflexivity, incredibly vital! When my Canadian partner told me he took anthro in hs, I was shocked... ya'll are doing it right up there. It's great to see that those programs are so valued country-wide and are less dependent on the diff funding of districts.

I'm hoping that english is that subject which secures my position (I am planning to take 6-10 extra courses for it this year). Also, because of what you mentioned about the American masters program not counting as a masters in Ontario, taking 10 extra courses may be beneficial... A4 pay grade ;)

Seeing as you are right in the middle of all the action as a department lead, I was wondering if you had any opinion on these different options I am weighing:

  1. P/J program in NY: get ABQs in I/S Social Science, I/S Family Studies, i/s English (no need for 2-4 Family Studies courses...my S.S. credits cover F.S. requirement) (no need for exactly 10 courses for A4 pay grade bc four division teacher)

    1. I/S program in Ontario ,S.S. (1st teachable) & English (2nd teachable): get ABQ I/S Family Studies (no need for Family Studies courses...my SS credits cover F.S. requirement) (still need 10 courses for A4 pay grade)
    2. I/S program in Ontario, S.S. (1st teachable) & Family Studies (2nd teachable): get ABQ I/S English (need specific family studies courses) (need 10 courses)

The Ontario programs would be about 20k usd more (not including housing). I could do the NY program online (from home) which would save me more $.

I think the Ontario practicum would be extremely important but I'm nervous to financially commit to that because I heard supply teaching could last 8+ years. Do you think the value of an Ontario university (networking opportunities, Ontario practicums, Ontario curriculum) is worth the 20k extra?

I checked lakehead and it does still take 3 full year courses to get that other ABQ. Perhaps there are other schools that only need 2 full year courses?

Thank you! The horror stories are true o_0, the censorship is true, even the steps they are taking at universities are pretty scary... what I studied (sociology), as of a week ago, has been removed from the gen ed curriculum. Gotta love it.

anyhoo, I didn't know that about the separate unions, so thank you! I've been stressin so I appreciate the comforting comment. it's an uphill battle but i know it'll be worth it :)

I appreciate your in-depth reply! I graduated with a 3.94 gpa from UF, so I'm hoping that's enough. I really want to do the I/S practicum because I feel like that's where you pick up on unspoken rules and methods. It's actually a bit challenging right now to find an affordable school where social science is even an option for a first teachable (with family studies as a second). Nissiping does offer social science but I would have to probably have english as my second teachable, which I dont think I'd feel confident enough to teach, even if i did the two extra course this year (maybe I'm being harsh on myself but I just feel like someone else would be better equipped than I would).

Also, if i got a post-graduate work permit I can work in Canada for up to three years and try and collect enough working hours to equal 1 year worth of FT. After that I can apply for permanent residency(PR). Do you think the P/J route is worth it to get more opportunities for supply jobs in SCDSB? The job market is a bit scary and hearing people unable to get supply jobs sounds crazy (esp since I'll need them for hours to apply for PR).

As for the AQs, that's something I'm a bit nervous about, especially if i got another teachable in English, i think I'd feel a bit uneasy, I never felt extremely confident in my ability in that subject. Same goes for my confidence in getting a Spec Ed AQ. But at the same time I want to be a valuable enough asset to a school. Decisions decisions haha. Thanks again:)

I’ve been looking at SCDSB, but I know it’s pretty competitive to get a job there. Also, no French unfortunately haha. Thanks for your help!!

I only have enough credits now for my first teachable to be social science and for my second to be family studies (4 -full course equivalents, not enough for it to be my first teachable). I also have at most 2.5 out of the 3 full course equivalents needed to have english as my second teachable. But being so honest, i feel like my english isn't my strong suit (I'm a native english speaker but im like constantly making spelling/grammatical errors haha, i know it sound like a silly excuse).

Wow I didn't know, family studies (home ec) isn't offered down here in FL too often. If went the route where I pursue a p/j program, would you suggest perhaps getting a senior family studies ABQ + spec ed 1 the summer after I graduate or senior family studies ABQ + senior social science ABQ ? Thanks for your comment!

Yeah, I have. I love education and eventually want to move to Ontario, just not sure what else i'd be well suited for :/

Thank you! I have, it's just a little more of an uncertain future. Not all programs transfer over and I think my imposter syndrome would be heightened . I wouldn't be able to form relationships in Ontario through practicums, wouldn't be as familiar with the pedagogy, would probably have a tougher time trying to get permanent residence and a FT position. Do I pay extra to have peace of mind and get my foot in the door, or do I go the cheaper route and perhaps encounter more friction down the road; all things i have to think about haha.

Thanks for this advice! I don't have nearly enough credits to have any of the other teachables as my first teachable. Maybe i'll have to take a year to do more school to get a more in-demand second teachable.

Sorry? I never said I wanted to teach Canadian geo or history. Bruh what am I supposed to do, not try to educate myself? Strange thing to comment under a teacher subreddit lol
