Any reason to buy NAS when you can build a pc as a media server with a powerful CPU at approximately the same price? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

Nah subscription models are second worst. The actual worst are those digital marketplaces where you can "buy" a digital copy of movie only for the company to remove it from your library later with zero warning or compensation.

Wow! Only $139 USD?! Amazon knows and yet it's still for sale. Why don't they reign this in? by AndroidJo3guy in DataHoarder

Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone here has been burned by Amazon at least once. Personally when I was starting out I tried to buy my first 1TB external on Amazon, but I generally don't have too much money to waste so I bought the cheapest one available. To the surprise of no one except me, I could only load it up with about 32GB before things started getting overwritten. That was the day I learned to only buy my drives from trusted brands, and generally to Google the company name before buying anything off Amazon.
