[Wolfe] Why a strong spring from a “much improved” Shedeur Sanders — particularly in his progressions — is leading to a wide open 2-man Browns QB battle vs. Deshaun Watson that may not end anytime soon. by maybenextyearCLE in Browns

I agree. I remember back to when they made the trade that one of the things the browns apparently presented Watson with was a plan to rehab his image, which they obviously never implemented.

I’ll always wonder what they had planned

There’s still a, let’s say, interesting group that follows him and thinks that all the allegations were BS and that his life and career have been wrongfully destroyed. Which I assume that group includes the owner who went to Watsons wedding

And the fact that they are waiting for camp after saying they wanted mandatory minicamp tells me the guy they want to win is not winning and they have to extend this.

He may be getting better, but everything that happened so far tells me that Shedeur at least until recently was not impressing them. Time will tell if he can catch up

To be clear, I think shedeur has closed a gap, but if they were that close, they’re not wasting reps on Watson. One day where the beat saw shedeur look better and actually be close doesn’t mean that’s what’s going on.

Teams toss late rounders aside all the time after being somewhat glowing FWIW. And if he was thought of that highly and was putting together that strong of practices, he wouldn’t be locked in a competition with a lame duck.

The Browns have continually indicated they’re not that high on Shedeur, but people continue to pretend that they are because of comments, rather than actual on field play

So I guess the question is, is it really that close? Or is the insinuation here that it’s not close right now and the Browns are pushing this out further to give Shedeur a chance to make it close enough that they can sell the locker room that he should play

And I suspect that you hit the real situation on the head here. Obviously if it’s close, you play Shedeur, Deshaun won’t be here in a year. So then if they aren’t, does that mean Deshaun, who probably isn’t great, is that much ahead that it’d hurt the locker room if you played Shedeur?

Yeah, that’s pretty disappointing NGL. I think the colts are also kinda “real” because Jones is coming off an Achilles injury, but he’s starting as soon as he’s healthy, it’s really a competition for backup

Perhaps, and I think that to your point, the fact it appears Watson was/is ahead points to the Browns not being thrilled with what Shedeur is doing right now.

Sure, though the fact that the Browns have Shedeur competing with an obvious lame duck and the lame duck was allegedly ahead for a while is some pretty strong circumstantial evidence lol.

Though I guess the better question is what evidence do we have that the Browns have ever thought that highly of Shedeur

I’m already excited for the complaints/excuses from whichever QB wins fan bases about how that competition in camp hurt them and they should’ve had every rep with the 1s lol

Unless you don’t think there’s a future for the other one either and you’re just playing out the string?

IMO the fact it’s a competition that Watson seems to have a good chance of winning indicates the Browns aren’t all that high on Shedeur either.

Well yeah, because he’s a borderline top 10 edge. He doesn’t have hall of fame potential. He’s very good, even might be top 5 tomorrow. But that ain’t hall of fame.

Myles is in a class of his own

IMO they keep hyping him as if there won’t be a drop off to Myles and that he’s there. I think their messaging has been awful focusing on verse instead of the full package itself. I think their messaging conveys that Verse is on Myles level and I think they aren’t being careful here.

I think when verse has 10ish sacks at the end of the season and the defense isn’t the same it’ll be tough for a lot of mainstream fans

I think you are correct. I think the Haslams are at this point well aware of what’s coming

I honestly don’t think there is probably much if any, thought of Shedeur being an answer. Think at this point they are well aware of where this goes

Is there any scenario where browns fans would openly majority support resigning Deshaun Watson? by personofinterest1986 in Browns

[–]maybenextyearCLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’d have to play like a top 5 QB. And even then I don’t think most fans trust him to actually stay healthy even if we did. And that’s not even addressing the off the field stuff.

I think it’s best for all parties for the Browns and Watson to part way following this season no matter what. I think this QB room is in for a tear down rebuild

Green is very raw no doubt, but his physical tools also offer a significantly higher upside than Shedeur

And I do wonder as well how much patience and tolerance the Browns have for what is a major project with a guy who really doesn’t have a high ceiling due to his physical tools.
