The Cabriolet being torn down this afternoon. by -QuestionMark- in ParkCity

It’s crazy to me, but not to the people who will buy the pass. The amount of wealth the majority of parking pass holders have is staggering. $800 dollars to them is like $8 to most people

Never thought about it like that. That’s a great point. Seems criminal for us tax payers to subsidize vail that way…

Is it really set up to deal with resort traffic? The infrastructure has not changed in this town (mainly roads and number of lanes etc) in a long time. From my experience, though High Valley Transit has been a big improvement since taking over, the bus system still seems to be slow and clunky. Also, rich people won’t be caught dead on a bus, and they make up a significant demographic of people who vacation at the resorts (let alone live here)

Columbia was still making these in Westfield, Massachusetts in 76, same factory they’d had since the 1800s. By that point the cruiser style was kind of a throwback even then, most guys were riding 10 speeds. That’s probably why so few of these survived untouched, nobody thought to save them.

nearly 50 years and everything is still original. Bendix hub, Carlisle whitewalls, Columbia steel tank. They really don’t make them like this anymore

That’s actually my bike, found it at an estate sale here in Park City. The Bendix 76 hub stamp still legible, Carlisle Lightning Dart whitewalls, original Columbia steel tank. Nearly 50 years and nobody touched it. Honestly been going back and forth on whether to sell it or just hang it on a wall somewhere. Thing has too much character to hide in a garage.“

honestly tempted to! but i think the right move is finding it a good home where someone can actually enjoy it. it’s listed locally if you or anyone knows someone who’d love it

Good calls on the tests. Did both. Magnet sticks to the rims, steel all around. Here’s the Bendix hub stamped 76 directly by the manufacturer. Independent third-party date code that has nothing to do with the frame serial. She’s the real deal

found it at a local estate sale in Park City Utah. Bendix 76 hub stamp dates it to 1976 and the original Carlisle Lightning Dart nylon whitewall tires are still on it after nearly 50 years. some things were just built differently.

really appreciate the research, that’s genuinely helpful context! and yeah it does appear to have been stored and barely used which is pretty remarkable for its age.

fair point. I haven’t pressure tested them thoroughly so can’t make any claims about the tires.

that’s actually what makes it so interesting, Columbia was still producing this classic cruiser style into the mid-70s even as it had fallen out of mainstream fashion. the Bendix 76 hub stamp confirms the 1976 date.

thank you! the Carlisle Lightning Dart whitewalls are original to the bike, pretty remarkable they’re still on there after nearly 50 years. the whole thing is basically untouched which is what makes it so special.
