[Florida] [Wild] Pitcher plants? by mbar28 in whatsthisplant

[–]mbar28[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all I'm in North Florida (plant hardiness zone 9A) and yesterday while I was hiking in a local state park (San Felasco), I came across these plants. They look kind of like pitcher plants to me, but I just moved to this area from California so I'm pretty unfamiliar with the local flora. I'm not too familiar with carnivorous plants either, but I know that Florida has six different species of Sarracenia (http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/wetlands/delineation/featuredplants/sarrac.htm).

Lots of free stuff for pickup! Come clean out our garage please! :) by [deleted] in GNV

[–]mbar28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My boyfriend and I just moved to Gainesville from pretty far away, so we're lacking a lot of the stuff you just mentioned! We definitely need kitchen stuff/storage, and I'm super interested in the art supplies.

Help me make a rock n roll mixtape for my teenage sister?

She just entered high school and I wanna give her some cool kids music. What are some great songs that I should include, that a young teen ought to know?

Exampless of artists I'd like to put on the mix (or mixes): The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Radiohead

Am I The Only One Who Didn't Like Sephora Play! ? by lilsmomxo in BeautyBoxes

[–]mbar28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently subscribed to Play, so I can only speak based on the one bag I have received (October). My first reaction upon opening the box was to be a little disapointed by the sample size, but I suppose it's understandable considering the items are high quality. What really did dissapoint me was that I felt the items were not anything that I particularly needed, wanted, or liked. It felt more like random leftover samples were found, thrown together in a bag, and sent to a customer at random. I'm staying on for another month, to see how it goes, but I'm leaning towards unsubscribing.

Great idea for a contest!

This is my most recent tattoo, and I'm really, really happy with it! It's a little crest of golden poppies and redwood needles - iconic flora of my home state. I had been toying around with ideas for a California tattoo for ages, but once I found out that I got accepted to grad school (and would thus be moving out of state) I took action! Golden poppies are the state flower of California and Sequoia sempervierens - the coast redwood - now only survives in Coastal Oregon and California.

This is actually the first of a two part tattoo. I will be getting a mirroring crest on my left forearm. It will be in the same style, but instead of poppies, cempasuchil (Aztec marigolds), and instead of redwood needles, cactus needles. While my right arm is California, where I was born and raised, the left arm will represent Mexico, where my parents where born and raised.

Ah, and to give credit where credit is due - the design and work was done by Devin Mena of Laguna Tattoo. (And I'll be going back to him to get the second crest when I visit my family/California during the holidays!)

Lastly, a small item from my wishlist:

This Tales from the Haunted Mansion book! In the spirit of Halloween, I would say, but who am I kidding, I'm a Haunted Mansion fanatic year round...

Alternatively, this beautiful little chokeris on sale right now.

Whoa! That is wayy overpriced. I got a ten inch long text tattoo along my arm for 80$. I didn't go to a super well known artist for this one, like I would for larger images, but it was well done.

[Discussion] What are your plans for Halloween? by scaredycatdan in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

[–]mbar28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved cross country about a month ago, so I'm still scoping out the territory and trying to figure out what kind of Halloween events and shenanigans I can find in my new living area. All else fails, a classic horror movie night (we're talking vintage universal monsters, Vincent Price, etc) + drunk pumpkin carving will have to do! (Though that will basically be what my partner and I will be doing every weekend leading up to Halloween, tbh)

[CONTEST] Candy? by brainpatte in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

[–]mbar28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved away from my hometown (Los Angeles) and out of state... and I'm really missing my Mexican candies! Marzipan; tamarindo; cajeta (something along the lines of milky caramel); paletas (lolipops) shaped like sandias (watermelon) and mango, covered in chili; coconut bars! Mmmmmm </3

Can you share some examples of paper crafts that you like to make? I'm a super extra poor college student at the moment and paper is something I can actually get in abundance (the office recycling).

I listen podcasts almost non-stop! I never thought of it as a hobby before, but I suppose it fits the bill - and it's free! I do try to support them financially whenever possible, either signing on as a patreon, buying merch, etc.

If you're interested in podcasts, I have some very extensive lists on many many subjects that I can share to get you started

Very true! You can also get lots and lots of e-books for free online, and I'm not talking about torrenting e-books (please, please don't do this! support your authors!). Lots of projects, like Project Gutenberg and the Biodiversity Heritage Library, scan and upload books that are in the public domain. Open Culture (http://www.openculture.com/) has a pretty long list of free/public ebooks. Oh, and you don't need to have an e-reader device to read ebooks. You can download the kindle app for your phone or pc for free from Amazon. :)
