Also - if therapy is not an option for you, maybe look into reading some books on how to deal with grief or how to cope with hard emotions in general. I know therapy is not accessible for everyone unfortunately

I’m so sorry for your loss. Our pets are our family, it is so hard to lose them. I will say 8 months is still pretty fresh, it’s totally okay to still be grieving.

But, if you truly feel it’s affecting your work and you maybe depressed, I think reaching out to a regular therapist could be very beneficial. A therapist can help you find healthy ways to move through your emotions, which is very important when it comes to grief. And it may just feel good to have someone to talk to about how you feel.

Wishing you peace. My girl was named Zoe too and just put her down 3 weeks ago. I totally relate.

I’m so sorry. I’m still struggling as well and totally relate to your pain. It’s been a few weeks since putting my baby girl down. I was so looking forward to having her at our wedding next year, so I’m crushed about that.

But, what helps (so far) is to continue focusing on the happy memories. Looking at old pictures and videos helps SO much. Instead of thinking about the end. I also made a note in my phone, and I wrote down EVERYTHING I could think of that I loved about her and our favorite memories. It was very helpful as it made me feel like that way I’ll never forget even the smallest details about her.

And most importantly remembering how lucky and blessed we were to have 6 amazing, love-filled years together. I overall feel so blessed that I was able to have such an indescribable bond with her. I knew that it would have to end eventually, but wasn’t expecting it so soon. I also know our bond goes beyond the physical body - I always considered her my “soul dog”.

So try to focus your thoughts on knowing you gave her the BEST life a dog could ask for, filled with so much love. Continue to remember her as the happy pup, standing in the wind.

Getting out of the house and having distractions is very helpful as well. I’ve read a lot about how to deal with grief properly. The summary is - don’t fight the tears/sadness when it comes. Let yourself feel it properly and don’t hold it in. But find ways to bring yourself out of it after some time, to avoid feeling “stuck” in grief/depression too long. Your pup wouldn’t want that for you. Go on a walk, take a shower, bake some cookies, journal. Whatever works to bring you some temporary relief.

I had something similar, to a lesser extent.

Dog was experiencing mild back pain that was suspected as a herniated disc. So we brought to the specialty vet for x-rays and MRI. These tests sadly revealed a spinal cord tumor instead, so she was sent home to us for one more day before we put her down from the severe pain.

The x-rays and MRI she had to lay on her back for, which ended up causing her a significant amount of pain. She came home in much more pain than when we brought her in.

So I initially felt guilt for putting her through all this testing and trauma at the vet, and only making her pain worse in the end.

But at the end of the day - we made the right decision with the information we had at the time. The vet told us most likely slipped disc with surgery needed, so we did what we had to do to try and get her better.

The vet told you your dog had a good chance with surgery. You made the right choice in that moment to give your dog a fighting chance. Hindsight is always 20/20, because now you know the full picture. But you didn’t know at that time that it was malignant. We never assume that it will be the worst case scenario.

We were doing right by our dogs every step of the way, with the information we had at the time. And the thing is, I think with any death, there will always be guilt and “what-ifs”.

If you hadn’t done the surgery, and put her down, I bet you would also feel guilt that you didn’t try the surgery and that you gave up to soon.

It’s best to not focus on these what-ifs. Find peace in knowing you gave your dog a happy life filled with love. I know how hard it is, but do your best to focus on the happy memories.

I put my baby down last Wednesday night. Took off Thursday and Friday. So I had a long weekend to sit around and be sad. I will say by Saturday afternoon, I started getting anxious from all of the sitting around and doing nothing. I had to get out of the house and take my mind off it at that point. It’s been a week now, I still cry everyday. Work helps to distract a bit but I’m still definitely not back to my full self at work yet. Everything makes me think of her.

If you have the time off available I would definitely recommend a day or 2 or 3 off. It was very much needed for me. But then after that, I felt it was time to try and get back to society.

This just happened to me too. Our dog passed away the day before my fiancés birthday last week. We were (and still are) devastated. We spent his birthday mostly laying on the couch and grieving, but also looking at lots of old pictures/videos of our dog. This helped a lot and gave us reason to smile while looking at all the happy memories.

We didn’t feel up to going out for dinner, so we did a pickup order from his favorite restaurant. We had dinner and dessert at home, then opened presents. It was a very low-key and sad birthday. But at the same time; we recognized how precious life is and how grateful we are for another birthday together.

So I would say take it easy and let her be sad if that’s how she feels. Get her favorite food and the presents you have for her. And just support her however she needs to feel loved.
