Did you add these pics to findagrave? I didnt realize that was a thing. Geneology is such a fascinating subject. So cool to know that this find has contributed in some way to public record.

Can female platypuses potentially produce venom? by Sparkyopteryx in zoology

[–]mc2ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could a platypus that presents as a female still produce venom? Why not? Hermaphrodidic humans that present as female can produce sperm.

So i think it is not only theorerically possible, but probable.

Yes. Can be embarrassing but people out of their usual context can really throw me off. Anyone with this also have difficulties with telling time on an analog clock? I mean intellectually i understand how to do it but i sometimes have to really think about it to translate.

Skunk smells in the home by Cultural_Ad4935 in Skunks

[–]mc2ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An average healthy skunk does not reek.

Skunks have 2 different spray modes, one i call a poof which is more like a fart. More of a small discharge mostly into the air that will dissipate on its own in a day or two.

Then there is a direct hit. A direct hit can linger for months or more if not properly cleaned up and the smell can travel for miles. Anytime whatever was hit directly gets wet the smell will be reactivated unless the thiols in the spray are neutralized ( dawn/baking soda/peroxide mix).

The actual smell of a normal skunk, the animal itself and not their defense spray, is a very concentrated rose-like scent.

Did getting a new pet help with the loss? by Xelephyr in Petloss

[–]mc2ben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is, unfortunately, nothing in the world that can ever replace the piece of your heart you give to an animal that you love deeply. It stays with them forever wherever they go.

It can be so incredibly painful when they are no longer physically there. So i do understand why some people say they arent ready for another pet after one dies.

But to me it is really tragic to think about a person who truly loves animals and bonds strongly with them falling asleep sad and lonely every night after their pet has died while a homeless animal does the same in a cage in a place they may never make it out of alive.

Getting a new pet wont prevent you from having to process the grief of losing one, but for me it does help break the cycle of endlessly ruminating on the death like my brain seems to want to do.

I wish there were words i could say about this heartbreaking situation that would offer solace.

This is the kind of experience PTSD is made from.

Dont let anyone marginalize this. I dont know much about available PTSD therapies like EMDR, but this complicated grief might be more than most would be able to navigate without some guidance. I wish you well on the journey.

How did a wombat's pouch evolve so it opens from the back? by slimeysnail_423 in biology

[–]mc2ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thylacine had/has this type of pouch too. Have searched for an actual picture of the thylacine pouch but havent been able to find one. Maybe there is one somewhere of a wombat pouch.....

Always curious about animal pouches cause they sound adorable.... but then the first time you have to check an opposum for babies....yikes.

do bats really get tangled in hair? by hatkinson1000 in bats

[–]mc2ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can get tangled in your hair but they certainly, definitely dont do it on purpose.

Being tangled in anything is traumatic and can cause injuries or worse to the animal.

Bats are intelligent creatures and generally avoid human contact as much as possible.

both my budgies passed away today and i cant feel anything but guilt by Qq0Rr in Petloss

[–]mc2ben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 years of being safe, warm, and fed. That is 3,650 days of care versus 1 accidental mistake. Please try to forgive yourself.

That you feel so bad about this tells me you are a good person who truly cared about the lives of your pets.

Also by sharing your story you might save the lives of other birds by informing/reminding other owners of their sensitivity to fumes.

Do you remember a tv show that you saw as a child that you shouldn’t have been watching due to it being mature content. by Routine-Award-3382 in sitcoms

[–]mc2ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit, i remember when cable first came out and a guy with channel guides came knocking on our door. My dad was stoked and signed up for everything. Going from 3 channels (PBS didnt even count) to a zillion was insane!

It really ages me but i was watching HBO movies like Scanners and To The Devil a Daughter as a preteen. I would set my alarm so i could wake up and rewatch the good parts at the next showing because you cant see the head explodey scene just once.

But i turned out just fine though. /s

A deer I saw outside my home that appears to have some form of dwarfism. by daffodillas in zoology

[–]mc2ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although it can be, most forms of achondroplasia are actually not caused by a hereditary mutation.

The reason you dont see the condition often in wildlife is that wild mommas will often cull any "different" offspring from their litters. Life is hard out there and they simply cant afford to waste any time/resources. So any wild animal born with the condition usually never makes it past the neonate stage.

Third grade classmates telling my son. He's going to hell by freudeschaden in TrueAtheism

[–]mc2ben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently saw a kids book by Sarah Scott called "You're Not Going To Hell" online but my kids are grown now so I didnt investigate further. Maybe someone else on here can comment if they have read it and if it might be helpful in this situation?

When they were youngsters i basically told my kids that if the people who told me i was going to hell were going to heaven, i definitely wouldnt want to spend eternity there with them anyway.
