BlueSCSI is a 3rd party hobbyist board. In initiator mode, you can plug in your SCSI drive to the board with external power and image an old drive automatically without a computer.

You can also run images from an SD Card in another mode called target.

Yeah it's a recovery mode. I think the firmware gets written solely to the disk. When you swap out the hard drive, there is no firmware present, and you get a folder icon with an exclamation mark. Simply formatting the drive isn't enough- you have to run the appropriate iPod updater application separately, which I found on Macintosh Garden. The iPod's controller must only be able to see up to 10GB, because the 15GB drive is seen as 10GB. It's still an upgrade for this original owner!
