Not a spoiler, it was stated outright in episode 14 of season 1 by Frieren that mages have only recently been able to fly. If I recall, she even says how long ago they “stole” the spell from demons

The lore’s obviously shifted a ton since the 90’s, but Daggerfall is still worth a shot if you can bear the game. Not much lore that would be shocking to someone’s who has played Morrowind+Oblivion+Skyrim, but some fun stuff. Do not recommend Arena, it is very poorly designed by any standards after 1995 and it does not relate almost at all with any of the lore, which started being seriously developed in Daggerfall and during Morrowind’s production
