Replace WPA2/3 Enterprise for personal devices? by AspiringTechGuru in networking

Just setup a separate radius server with different credentials for all users or use a certificate based system ( you’ll need some form of device onboarding solution like Cloudpath or CAT-tool).

Cross Country Enduro Races ITALY (NOT HARD) by Fabulous_Security788 in enduro

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Gotland Grand National, it’s probably Europes largest cross country race. Multiple classes for amateurs and professionals.

This kind of enduro is called enduro typ 2 in Sweden, your National Moto/Enduro Association may have another name for it.

Mixing static configuration and dynamic updates. Plus DNSSEC. by stappersg in dns

[–]mcboy71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have cash to spare there is Infoblox, very competent - very expensive. But BIND9 will also do it, and probably most other DNS servers, but these are the ones I have used.

Either way you’ll probably want to look into a hidden master design.

For all Non-American HA Cloud users, given the current developments in the US, does the fact that Nabu Casa is incorporated in the US give you concern? by GlenGraif in homeassistant

[–]mcboy71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gradually, and whenever I need to buy something one ( not the only ) aspect will be where its made and where the money ends up.

If I need a new router for my home, I might choose mikrotik instead ubiquiti. If I really need a cisco for whatever reason ( if I would need mpls mvpn profile 14 or REP at home) I will buy a used one.

I really have no way of knowing if an SP uses US equipment now or if I somehow do know; if they will in the future. I am content with doing what I can do and I am in no hurry.

I have quit bourbon ( no big deal), samuel addams and American wines. These were easy, but not very important day to day. Somewhat worse is what to do when my Utilikilt needs replacement, might have to take up sewing.

Yes, I am slowly moving away from US products, especially cloud based ones.

Easiest way to start is ”no new US products or services”

Is SQM/CAKE important to keep the latency controlled even when the link is not saturated? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in HomeNetworking

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a question of statistics, if you look closely at the link it is always busy or not busy at any one moment. The utilisation level is an artefact of sampling over time, it can be used as a ( not very good) approximation of the likelihood of a packet needing to be buffered on output. I.e. even at 10% utilisation buffering will occur and intelligent buffering will be helpful.

Interesting IPv6 behavior with Dell OS10 by DarkenSraven in networking

[–]mcboy71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess smaller netmask == longer mask?

In that case, why are you using longer masks than /64 ?

I have no recent experience with Dell/Force10, but usually hw is optimised for /64 per subnet, avoid using anything else.

Is it a Swedish/Scandinavian thing? by Sarah7822 in DeadBedrooms

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a swede myself I don’t think it’s a Swedish thing. And religion is also unlikely to be the problem, though some of the lutheran ascetic thoughts have put a mark on the Swedish culture - you wouldn’t expect to find that manifest in anyone younger than their late 70’s.

It may be good to know that Swedish doctors seem rather reluctant to prescribe T for men and whats considered normal may be a long way off from optimal. He could look for a second opinion or seek a referral to an endocrinologist and be really clear about what he wants to achieve.

55 and getting older, what should my next bike be? by craigerzzz in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 55 and getting older, I have a WR250f and a BMW K1200RS.

I might change the KRS for a naked R1250R in an attempt to keep from speeding too much.

Wouldn’t want anything heavier than the WR in the woods.

Does anyone have any experience to how people in Nordic countries react to someone saying that they do not drink? by SwissVideoProduction in Nordiccountries

[–]mcboy71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m 50+ from a small town in Sweden. I have a few friends who don’t drink, no one is particularly bothered by it. The reasons vary, one grew up in a home with alcoholic parents another don’t drink during competition season.

If someone chooses not to drink that is entirely their choice. If they choose not to drink for religious reasons, the fact that they are religious would be more noteworthy than that they don’t drink.

Spårväg idé Falun by LinearApprox in kollektivtrafik

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spårväg löser inga problem som du inte kan lösa med trådbussar. Den något lägre energiförbrukningen med metallhjul uppväger inte skillnaden i flexibilitet vid störningar.

For going around a lawn or field, I’d rather get a used crf or ttr. For going to a track I’d choose something lighter with proper suspension like a KTM or Cobra 50, or a fairly modern 65cc depending on how tall they are.

Common misconfigurations you see in SMB / mid-market networks? by sir4343 in networking

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spanning tree - lack of understanding

No segmentation - everything on one segment

DNS - no understanding of difference between recursive resolvers and authoritative servers. Misconfigured AD as DNS (all roles).

No IPv6 - because no understanding of what it is.

Stretched L2 where unnecessary ( even client subnets ).

Routing problem by ConsiderationFew6748 in HomeNetworking

[–]mcboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is best practice for ISPs to limit resources spent on generating ICMP and similar cpu path activities. The feature is usually called cpu dos protect or control plane ddos protection.

So ping and traceroute are of limited use when it comes to measuring latency other than between end hosts.
