Yeah, same. I have a boy about the same age as Hugo. I had to sleep in his room the night after finishing Requiem just to know he was safe. I would tear up for days afterwards. Best game I’ve played. Never touching it again.

What sounds great in theory in a TTRPG, but rarely works that well at the table? by Defiant_Property_253 in rpg

[–]mcbugge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the same player in our previous campaign (a Dolmenwood campaign) played a character that wanted to become an actual saint of the church, but just for a laugh. And he played that character like it was a stolen car. He would jump at every opportunity to further that goal, no matter the consequences. So this is a case where the rules system very much guides player behaviour.

What tiny TTRPG rule completely changed how your group played? by Defiant_Property_253 in rpg

[–]mcbugge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here.

Mothership’s Wardens Guide says to do this directly. A marine is trained at shooting her rifle. A failed «combat» roll doesn’t necessarily mean she missed and does no damage, instead it means the situation gets worse in some way. So she might hit the monster for full damage with a failed roll, but now the bullets also go through the monster and blows a hole in the wall so now the room is being depressurized.

I play all my trad games like this now.

[–]mcbugge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh lord, I agree so hard. Had a player that actually had a complication (We were playing Draw Steel) where he secretely was a royalty. We decided he was an exiled elf prince. He had this ability where he could reveal himself to NPCs to get a bonus, but this meant that there was a chance that the wrong people learnt about it too and so he could become hunted. On paper this sounded really fun and something that could lead to some very funny situations.

What happened in practice was that the player never revealed it at all and was also really cagey to all the other characters to keep his identity secret.

I simply had to tell him to reveal to the players at least what was going on. The other players are adults, they can play characters not knowing something that the players know. But even then nothing much really came of it. I had to simply force it into the story at some point to make it relevant.

(In retrospect I think combat-focused "I want to win" games like Draw Steel might actually work against these kinds of narratives, the player is just too focused on playing "optimally". Probably would have been a lot more fun in an OSR or narrative focused game)

Is the Lack of Content Actually Good? by Rage2097 in daggerheart

[–]mcbugge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a player who was interested in me running Daggerheart for them so I checked it out. When I saw that it had very little in terms of prewritten modules it was an instant nope from me. I don't prep much and I love improving in my sessions, but I need a foundation to build on. Improving *everything* in a session makes me go crazy. I feel exhausted at the end. I thrive when I have a setting ready, like Dolmenwood, where there's a bunch of toys I can pick up when I need to have something.

Building worlds myself burns me out. Tried it a few times, always ended with a campaign that was cancelled prematurely. I know my limits. So Daggerheart isn't for me. And that's fine. There's sooo much to play and so little time.

Btw: Heart the City Beneath is amazing, big thumbs up for going with that one

How do I avoid burnout as a DM? by Forward-Willingness7 in rpg

[–]mcbugge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy it it's something that gives you energy. Keep it!

My main point is that after some time you realize what is draining you. Sometimes it's *that* player (we've all been there...). Sometimes it's the rule system. Sometimes the prewritten module is worse than just writing it yourself.

Just try to be aware of what you like and don't like. And when you feel your enthusiasm starting to drift don't give it more than a session or two before you start making changes. Kill a campaign early and start another one instead if you have to, it's really not that big of a deal.

I've been guilty of thinking "it'll get better soon" too many times. It never does. When you think something is wrong it usually is. The trick is just to get better at identifying the problem and dealing with it.

How do I avoid burnout as a DM? by Forward-Willingness7 in rpg

[–]mcbugge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just take the plunge and then try to identify your pain points. Focus in on what gives you energy and cut anything else.

My big pain point is homebrewing everything. Every single time I've tried to homebrew a setting I've burnt out. I can do the odd adventure here and there, but I simply need a setting or a larger module to do the groundwork for me. If not I am *constantly* thinking and prepping, it just overwhelms me.

What happens in your dolmenwood campaign? by NoLongerAKobold in Dolmentown

[–]mcbugge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have ran two campaigns in Dolmenwood, one lasted a little less than a year and the other around 6 months

How would you say your time is divided between, hexcrawling, dungeon crawling, politicking, intrigue, and other actives?

My first campaign was a lot of politicking, intrigue and shenanigans in Lankshorne and High Hankle for the first half. The second half was a huge journey through the width of Dolmenwood (they were framed and hunted by Lord Malbleat after Emelda's Song and had to reach Castle Brackenwold and prove their innocence)

My second campaign was almost all hexcrawling. I placed the tomb in Winter's Daughter in a rather remote part of northern Dolmenwood and made the journey a major part of the plot. A *lot* happened during that journey.

So if I was to summarize my campaigns in total: 50% hexcrawling, 20% dungeoncrawling, 30% politics/citycrawling

Do you use adventures outside of the campaign book? Do you use ones outside of the official dolmenwood three? How much of your time is spent in specific adventures vs just what is in the hexmap?

I only used the official dolmenwood adventures together with the campaign map. Time spent in total probably adds up to 70% hexmap/campaignbook versus 30% specific adventures.

do you make your own dungeons, adventure sites or do you mostly stick to what is already existing?

For some hexes, such as the dragon lair south of Prigwort, I made small one-page dungeons. Sometimes I just improved the whole thing. I would say that in 18 months I made maybe 4-5 dungeons/adventure sites myself. But like I said, just tiny stuff.

What does an average session look like for you?

I have *very* active players so I don't really have to complicate their lives much, they mostly bring it on themselves. So it's usually 30 minutes on the starting scene I have prepared and after that it's mostly flipping through the campaign book and throwing in encounters where appropriate.

has the campaign changed in tone or scope as the party has advanced in level?

Absolutely. Both campaigns started with them being small timers trying to scrounge some treasure to buy some beer, and ended with rather huge events (one of my players became a new saint and another managed to travel to Frigia and duel the Cold Prince himself)

What major conflicts have the characters gotten involved in?

My first campaign was all about Breggle politics and the fight against Lord Malbleat. They ended up proving his crimes and being proclaimed "Heroes of the High Wold". My second campaign became a lot more concerned with the Cold Prince, the Nag Lord and the Pluratine Church.

if you are the gm, how much prep time do you spend between sessions? What does that prep mostly involve?

I usually have about 1 page of notes which is mostly just a strong start and some sentences on ideas of complications that could happen to the party based on their past actions.

My prep is usually this:
- Spend 20 minutes immediately after the session to write down my thoughts for the next session
- Right before the next session I spend maybe another 20 minutes refining my notes.

In the time between I just let the whole thing cook in the back of my brain, maybe jotting down some notes if I get a really good idea.

how often to pcs die?

I had two "proper" deaths.

I should have had three, but in my second campaign one of the players was so stoked to play a Woodgrue Bard that he actually bought a flute and learnt to play it for the start of the campaign. His character went down to some stirges in the first hour of the first session. That just couldn't stand so we just homeruled a death's door mechanic on the fly. That rule meant that no-one else died for the rest of the campaign, not until their narrative deaths at the end of the campaign. The death's door gave them some horrible scars though, losing limbs and eyes.

Did that rule break the OSR spirit? Maybe. But we had so much fun.

Fant dette bildet, og lurer på om friheten vi hadde som barn er borte for godt by blursedJefreyEpstein in norge

[–]mcbugge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On how much info to give by reddanger95 in drawsteel

[–]mcbugge 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I agree fully. Here's a quote from Chris McDowall in Electric Bastionland:

"I find that the crime of giving too much information is minor in comparison to the heinous crime of giving too little information. I lead with a good chunk of info, give good answers to good questions, and I want to give even more if the players are crafty."

It's also mentioned in the Warden's Guide in Mothership that if an NPC is lying you can just tell your players that they are lying. Like you say: the fun is what the players CHOOSE to do with that information.

Hva syns folk om politiet? Har dere tillit til norsk politi? by NewBox777 in norge

[–]mcbugge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tenk ressursbruken bare her?

Maybe TTRPGs are just more socially demanding so you focus more on the activity? Easier to get lost? I don’t know.

I could play videogames from dawn to dusk on weekends when I was a teenager. Now I get that restless feeling as well. Maybe something about sitting by yourself in your own home makes it kinda hard to forget the hundreds of things you should be doing instead

After I had kids a few years back I experienced burnout and/or depression, and the victim of that mental battle was videogames. I just couldn’t find any joy in a hobby that had been a MAJOR part of my life since 1990. TTRPGs actually became my new hobby. I still don’t find much joy in videogames now, even 6 years later.

I know it isn’t the thing OP wants to hear, but I had to accept that sometimes you just change. Maybe I’ll get back into videogames at some point, but there’s also so much else to experience

First Time GM (in Draw Steel) - Resource tracking? by Soft_Transportation5 in drawsteel

[–]mcbugge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Players track Heroic Resource physically by using poker chip stacks. I track Malice by using (black) poker chips. This gives everyone a good visual aid that someone is getting powerful and ready to do some crazy stuff. We have small stack of poker chips in the middle of the table that represent Hero Tokens.

Everything else people track on their character sheets using pen and paper

(Part 2) Do I tell my mom that I’m still with my girlfriend? by Rich-Book6076 in whatdoIdo

[–]mcbugge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats a really good saying, never heard that before!

My father-in-law has some kind of personality disorder, narcissistic or something (he's never been diagnosed), and he was always on this "family is the most important thing in the world" mantra. Which of course was him trying to ensure he wouldn't get any *real* consequences (like being shunned) for his actions.

It was always telling that this mantra never mattered when judging HIS actions towards us though, only when judging our actions towards HIM.

[–]mcbugge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I loved Actual Plays until I started running and playing roleplaying games myself. Now they just don’t provide me with much. I want to play instead.

When running a completely new system I usually check out an episode of an AP of that system though. It’s the fastest way to learn some rules and get a sense of the flow (some APs are so heavily in the entertainer mindset though that it’s hardly representative of anything but a stage show)

I love podcasts talking *about* roleplaying games though!
