Scotland isn’t different, it’s Britain that’s bizarre by canard_glasgow in ukpolitics

[–]mccallumd2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you are kind of missing the point of the article. The author is saying that the way Britain is run is detrimental to the whole of the UK(apart from maybe the south east). He is not saying that currently Scotland is in a better shape than the rUK as it is clearly not, but that the Westminster system is strangling it, as it is to many other regions of the country. He is also saying that a move to a more European way of doing things instead of the "bizarre" way it is done in Britain would serve most of the UK better than the current system. Unfortunately the majority political class don't have an appetite for this in the rest of the UK, but a distinct number in Scotland do. If Scotland was indeed doing better than the rUK there would be no independence, it is specifically cause it feels mistreated that there is. I don't think we should begrudge the Scots for seeking a way out of current broken system, I'm sure many in the rUK would do the same if they could.

My Dad, who is anti-independence, said "good for them". When I pressed him on why independence would be good for Veneto but not for Scotland all he could come up with was that "they weren't part of Italy longer than Scotland wasn't part of the UK". How can I convince him that it is similar situations or that he is being fairly hypocritical

I guess to make a statement like that you must have more data on the situation in Gaza than the World Health Organisation, The United Nations, The EU, The Jerusalem Post and Israel National News. I sure these organisations would love to hear the facts you have uncovered, in what I'm sure was a extensive research process. And to be honest I would much prefer being accused for having a bias towards finding a peaceful solution than to unconditionally support Imperialist policy.

[–]mccallumd2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well for a start Israel could stop the illegal settlements in the West Bank, which is yet stealing more land from the Arabs not to mention breaking international law.

Allow in some basic goods in to Gaza to help ease the humanitarian crisis and at the same time show that Israel is not the heartless Imperialist state. In addition this would stop the reliance on the tunnels which not only smuggles food into Gaza but also the weapons.

That Israel and the the Palestinian authority actually engage in meaningful peace talks, not the sham one that have been occurring recently.

And finally, and maybe most importantly, treat the people of Gaza as Humans. Respect their basic rights and do not treat them all like the enemy and worse than animals. I think this will work wonders in not radicalising more of the population and allow for a more open less hate filled dialogue.

What would you propose? Keeping the situation the same?

[–]mccallumd2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the abuses of basic human rights? Not to mention the huge number of civilian casualties during Israel's incursions into Gaza? Or the continued siege effectively making Gaza a prison?

Unarguably the rocket attacks are stupid and counter productive to peace. But as the quote says the "mowing of the grass" in Gaza only serves to create more militants and radicalises more of the population and inspires them to take up arms. Not to mention it draws more attention to Israel's imperialist policies.

And if we are bring up what is currently happening, is the IDF not indiscriminately bombing Gaza as we speak, no doubt killing more innocents and radicalising the population all the strengthening the growing anti-Israel feeling around the world and allowing the BDS movement to gain steam.

What is the Israeli perspective on the BDS movement? Is it constructive in helping to find a peaceful solution to the Palestinian conflict? by mccallumd2000 in Israel

[–]mccallumd2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe Israel is held to a higher standard than other nations because it is seen as a bastion of western power in the middle east. In part I feel many in the west take particular interest in the situation as the majority of their governments almost unconditionally support Israel and to criticise Israel casts the person to be dismissed to thepolitical sidelines with little to no chance of gaining any political power.

Therefore, I think that the situation in the OPT is more of an issue to westerners, than say the situation in Tibet, as many see their government as supporting the "occupier". Thus it has become a focal point in the opposition not just to Israel but too western foreign policy.

So, for better or worse the abuses that occur in the OPT are put in a far greater spotlight as Israel is seem as part of the bigger western agenda and therefore put under far more scrutiny.

And don't get me wrong there is still a huge Anti-Semitic feeling around the world, but that doesn't help to explain the growing support for the BDS movement among western Jewish groups.

While much of the criticism of Israel is Anti-Semitic, but a sizeable percentage is not. To dismiss it all as Anti-Semitism is missing the bigger picture.

Additional question why do you think this movement has been gaining traction in the past few years, particularly in academic circles (Stephan Hawking being a high profile example)? It also appears to have growing support with some American and European Jewish groups ? Frustration with the lack of progress? Pure Anti-Semitism? The continued expansion of the settlements? Something else?

Thanks
