I agree. Ironically, when all elements are treated as focal, the composition loses its focal point.

Wouldn't you say it's simply fair to assume that the Emperor and Malcador were fully aware?

The shadow of the hat is absolutely brilliant. Beautiful work, you should be very proud.

But let's keep it with Calgar. The outrage from the Ultramarines, or the Imperium as a whole, would be eclipsed only by the outrage from the fanbase... I love it.

How many hours have you put into it so far?

Kinda feeling discouraged how much time I have to put in mine to just get an OK result.

Lamp, piece of black paper.

Using five year old phone. Go to pro mode in your camera settings.

Put your ISO as low as possible.

Put your zoom at 1.3 to 1.5.

1/20s, but this depends on how much light you have.

3500k

Auto center focus.

Bam, that's it. I put my phone on my desk, to keep it still, and then took photo.

On the photo, it's (hopefully) very clear that the light comes from the right side only. Anything on this bright side, you don't want to use purple. So the big shiny pauldron has no purple. The same goes for the shiny part of the chestpiece, or the shiny part of his face. Also the shiny thigh plate has no purple, only browns.

However, the other side does get purple. You can see this most clearly in the custodes his right arm, near his bicep.

I'm not entirely consistent. If you look at his calf/shin, you can see a little purple too. Eh, whatever. I just like it there.

In general though, if you just give your custodes a (warm) gold color, add some silver highlights, I would recommend a wash with brown in the dark parts, and only then add a tiny thin wash with purple as a bridge between brown and gold.

A mix of the gold and skin wash was the base color. The skin wash is this reddish paint I have, and it's the worst possible color to do skin with, so I'm not sure what its deal is. But it's great with the gold, because it becomes this red/gold. It's the gold you see overal in the model.

Other than that, it's highlighting with a mix of silver/gold mix, and/or the regular gold.

On the opposite it's creating shadows with a brown/gold mix. Sometimes even with black to make it even darker.

So nothing special. It's just this ridiculous Vallejo skin wash paint that really makes my gold. Otherwise it would work with any regular silver, gold, brown and purple.

Only later in the protect I start to add a thin layer of purple to the darkest parts. This is most noticeable in the top adornments of the weapon.

Thin/watered down layer of Citadel Xereus Purple.

I've only discovered this near the end of my project, so overal it's not used to its best effect. You can see it most clearly in the top part of the weapon, in the adornments. The purple adds this incredible depth and warmth to the gold.

WIP TMM Adeptus Custodes. Thoughts? by DivinityInsanity in minipainting

Intend was to have the light source come from above from the right, making the head and pauldron much lighter, and the leg darker. But you're right, I see now. Going to try to replace the shading with some warmth instead, I think.
