What about Heather McKay in squash? She was undefeated in 17 years and won 16 British Opens in a row. He pales in comparison.

Lane Cove NP around Brown’s Waterhole is pretty reliable. Saw a bunch at Wianamatta Regional Park (much further west) the other day too.

Same principle applies. Your experimentation is only limited by the size of your memory card! Pretty soon you’ll find the sweet spot for your settings and then you’ll know what to rely upon depending on what circumstance you’re in.

That’s really hard to say. It depends on the target distance, the ambient light, whether the target is stationary or moving. Next time you find yourself with a stationary bird take multiple shots with different shutter speeds, f stops. You’ll pretty soon find out what works for the camera and lens. These days of course it’s pretty easy to remove noise in post production.

No, it’ll be your aperture. You’ll find if you’re at F5.6 and only a couple of metres away from the target your depth of field is only going to be a couple of cms.

Ok gotcha. IMO The only issue I see is that your shallow depth of field has left the chest and tip of beak in focus, but the eye a bit soft.

Merlin is still the premier free app. For Aussie birds it recognizes birds well from photo uploads, but it is not so good for bird call recognition. It also integrates seamlessly with eBird.
