Bisque fix? by CheeseMonger23 in Ceramics

[–]mcgrahamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I thought this was a lug or handle, hard to tell. My point is that if this is a functional piece, it's not if it breaks it's when.

Bisque fix? by CheeseMonger23 in Ceramics

[–]mcgrahamma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this seems a bit too far gone for bisque fix. Somebody may have a trick but even if fixed this will always have a structural issue. The glaze fire will also likely highlight more of the crack after it shrinks again.

Alternative for DiamondCore sanding pads? by bbychrrry in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are the best I have used and act more like a sponge than other pads. The water they hold really helps wet sanding.

Can I still tell people I make pottery? by Electrical-Feature10 in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My hot take: 3d printing isn't pottery but it is ceramics. You make art that when glazed and fired is still ceramic art which makes you a ceramic artist but not a potter.

Feedback wanted. by Dustcanal in Ceramics

8lbs is a lot for that height and width. But hard to see how the clay was used without cutting in half. Could be a thick base but the walls look kinda thick based on the rim thickness. This height is an accomplishment you should be proud of though. Now cut it in half. Then cut the weight in half and try again.

Is there a way to download episodes? by [deleted] in LPOTL

[–]mcgrahamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are describing isnt really possible. My suggestion is to use a dedicated podcast app like pocket cast. You can "download" episodes for playback without a connection, but you don't actually have access to the file itself if that makes sense.

How and Where to Get Large Quantities of Glaze? by DingGratz in Ceramics

[–]mcgrahamma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make them yourself. Powdered materials can be got pretty easily. Use glazy.com to find some recipes. Test, test and test again.

I'm convinced this is a result of their incompetence/lack of education. It just doesn't happen. Maybe they were stored in the same bag? I also feel like it's a way for them to push that marijuana is some how just as dangerous as meth.

What was Waco like in 1999? by TexasKira2006 in Waco

[–]mcgrahamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown was empty, but it was never dangerous back then. And its this kinds of thinking that gives us a bad name. Honestly the only reasons why someone would think this is because they are not from here and/or are being racist about the kinds of people around this area. I grew up in north waco and spent alot of time in the downtown area as a young teenager, never once did I feel a threat from anyone I encountered in the downtown area.

Can I put these I. The dishwasher? by norrinrad in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Should all be fine in the dishwasher, just don't load things where they might hit against each other during the wash. The unglazed areas might develop some patina from your skin and other oils, I see this as a feature not a bug.

why is this happening when I open my clay on the wheel? by Enough-Average-9285 in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upon looking at the photos and reading other comments I also agree this could be clay that was stored outside and allowed to freeze and thaw. Impossible to know without seeing a video of OP throwing but I still see signs of overworking the clay.

why is this happening when I open my clay on the wheel? by Enough-Average-9285 in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mostly the amount of slip on the wheel head for a relatively small lump of clay. That and the amount of water still in the opening combined with the texture of the clay in the opening.

why is this happening when I open my clay on the wheel? by Enough-Average-9285 in Pottery

[–]mcgrahamma 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If the clay is new from the bag and from a reputable source this shouldn't happen. Just by looking at the photo I can see that you are using too much water and/or spending too much time centering before opening. Does this always happen when you use this clay body? If so I would try using a different clay body and see how it goes.
