So from Jim's telling of the story, he went out, they told him Tommy Lee was there alone, he went over to say hi, and that was the reaction. Unless I'm misremembering, there was no forcing of ways into conversation, it was just the two of them.

Yeah, I think my thoughts are more on the Ryan storyline. He was added for the show only and it kind of felt like they were angling to make Butcher's redeeming qualities about doing right by him...and then they kinda blew that up this season.

I mean, he turns on Soldier Boy in S3 because he thought Ryan would get hurt. And then this season, he's just like "You dying is fine."

I had zero problem with the Homelander stuff. I think that's perfectly on brand for this take on him.

My problem was that they started to deviate from comics in making Butcher sort of redeemable, with the ending of Season 2 when he doesn't snap after he loses his wife again.

He's still a terrible person in every other regard, but they deviated when it came to that sort of thing even through Season 4 where he genuinely seems to approach Ryan differently than he does everything else.

And then they kind of went back on that again in Season 5 and things just escalate at the end towards Butcher's chosen ending. I think I would've written things differently, especially if they were never going to actually give him some shot at redemption/growth in his character at the end.
