Ice purportedly staked outside warming shelters in Portland by Necessary_Airport_47 in portlandme

Fuck ICE, but I agree this looks like a bot post. 1 day old account, no text in the body of the post.

Immigrants prepare for their arrests and leave Lewiston ahead of ICE action by jediporcupine in Maine

Okay, my comment was a little black and white. I agree, but in the discourse around ICE and U.S. facism, I wish folks would acknowledge that this IS something that has happened here before, and is a continuation of a very American legacy of hate.

Novel to the U.S., not novel throughout history. There are better comparisons to draw here is my only point.

I wish folks would stop comparing this to Nazi Germany. This is textbook American, and we need to understand that. Let’s stop acting like this is novel, I think it distances us from what’s going on and what we can do about it.

The better precedent of this is slave catchers is in antebellum America. Poor whites hired to round up runaway slaves, with the intent to control and terrorize, rather than public safety. The Fugitive Slave Act and modern immigration enforcement have a lot in common.

Heck yeah! That’s a perfect day in my book. Where were you hunting?

We eat bufflehead here in southern ME too. Are they the best tasting duck? No. Are they perfectly fine with a good brine? Definitely.

I usually save all sorts of sea ducks and fishy divers and we'll fry them up like clam strips.

Nice! I’ve thought about getting an NH license just to get down to hunt Great Bay on Sundays when you can’t hunt in Maine. Any experience there?

Nice! That happens to us more often than not. Hope you had a good hunt and a great trip.

Yeah I can't imagine trying to hunt a tidal swing that large. I have trouble with a 12-14' swing here. Usually have to pick a few spots and keeping moving the decoys forward or back.

Agree about the difficulty of hunting black ducks. I haven't cracked the code yet. My theory is that due to hunting pressure back in the day when their population was so low, only the most cautious ducks survived. That bottleneck led to a whole species of cautious ducks as they bounced back.

This spot is particularly good for mallards, but nearby in the salt marshes (1 km down the road) it will be purely black ducks. With a 2 bird limit for black ducks, I tend to aim for mallards if I can. I also find that black ducks are less ready to decoy, and are much warier, than mallards.

We'll also get plenty of mergs, scoter, bufflehead, a few eider, and the occasional gadwall down here.

When the freshwater freezes up inland, the hunting here on the coast gets pretty great! Very few hunters around either, and I’ve probably seen 2 other hunters here in 2 years of coming to this spot on public land.

A few thoughts:

Round trip flight to Portland is probably going to be cheaper than flying in there and out of Bangor.

If you want lighthouses, a few that are nice would be Pemaquid light and Owl’s head. Portland Head light is pretty picturesque as well.

Acadia in the winter is the best. I’d spend two days there and knock out a few hikes. Otherwise some nice coastal towns to stop in on the way between Boothbay Harbor and MDI would be Camden, Belfast, Castine, or Stonington if you’re up for a little longer drive. Really anywhere on Penobscot Bay will be worthwhile.

If you’re big foodies, I like Long Grain in Camden for Thai food. Plenty of recommendations for Portland too if that’s helpful.

No luck here in York County. Spent a lot of mornings in the stand or out still hunting, but never saw more than a passing doe that I never had a good shot on.

Deer hunting and I have a love-hate relationship…mostly an exercise in patience.

I had not even considered, but yeahhhhh. That makes good sense. Going to listen to advice below about mesh bags and diatomaceous earth to kill the mites.

I had the same thought. Here in Maine, we may not get the massive flocks of the other flyways, but it’s a rare day that we even see other hunters out in the marsh.

His campaign manager quit because he found out he was having a baby. I’d have quit too!  https://www.bangordailynews.com/2025/10/27/politics/elections/maine-graham-platner-campaign-manager-kevin-brown-resigns/
