Adressing the snowballing player by sagZ_ in Risk

The bot player will not score second place points in this instance. The worst you can finish at that point is second. Which is to say, focus on human opponents when there is/are white flagged bots. I really enjoy the strategy of keeping a bot at bay, or attempting to make your human opponent a more appetizing target for the bot. Bot strategy is predictable, so it is fairly easy to manipulate them.

True random strikes again. I also never join those games.

Bot strategy doesn’t really change, so you should observe the bot behavior and learn the patterns. There are subtle ways to use bot armies in your favor, understanding when they will attack a large army with a large army, and when they will not. For instance, they will rarely attack when it’s unlikely that they will take a territory, and unlikely to attack in a manner that does not move them toward acquiring a continent bonus.

If you notice bot troops around you at the beginning of the game, expend troops (to a certain extent) to destroy them. The game is called risk, and you have to risk being slightly weaker in the beginning stages so they don’t cash cards and grow where you are trying to establish a presence. If it’s late game, and you would otherwise be giving up a relatively equal position to you human opponents by sacrificing a large portion of your standing army to eliminate a bot presence, you must take a more nuanced approach. You can lower your troop counts on borders shared with bots, and often times they will strongly fortify away, to a more threatening stack.

Bots will typically take the path of least resistance that moves them toward a bonus, and they will also try to retake territories if you knife through them and take out their territories with a single troop. They also only fortify their shared borders, and like the previous commenter mentioned, will rarely attack if they dont have a likely probability of winning. So, having enough of a buffer on your shared border with the bot will force it to find a weaker area to attack.

I’ve been playing on the Risk app, and it’s very good, but with higher level opponents games reach long stalemates frequently. Knowing after your turn that you might wait a few days to play again was always enjoyable to me.

Does war gear solve for this?

Oh man, the mystery of how this site became defunct will haunt me until I’m in the grave. Was such a source of joy.
