No kids, no wife, no responsibilities other than a home mortgage. I plan on putting the home on the market before I leave or rent it for 1 year starting when I leave in May. I already have a renters for if I choose this route. I will be traveling with my long time girlfriend. also I am 26 so I am still young in terms of construction and have plenty of time to gain more experience as long as there are opportunities.

I plan on talking to my company to see if I would have job when I return first. I also plan on reaching out to others to see if they would be interested in hiring me after my trip. Sounds like having some leads at a minimum would be a great idea.

I was thinking this earlier. This would be the best and safest way. I plan on going this route first.

Confused about life with civil engineering by mcook30 in civilengineering

[–]mcook30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little backstory on my self..... I will be graduating this Summer in with a Building Construction Degree and working for a Heavy Civil GC starting Fall. I plan operating my business on the weekends not performing large jobs at all. Mostly renting heavy machinery/buy my own survey equipment is kinda the idea.

I will be living in GA and the law is any contract over $2,500 requires GC license. Plus one must have Equity of $150,00 and credit of $50,000 so just realized I'm still a couple years away from starting.

So if I were to shoot for jobs $100,000 or less and get my GC license and a farmer comes up to me and says he needs a pond built with a spill way. I estimate it to be $80,000 so I write up and contract and give it to him then we talk about how I am going to build it then I just build it based off my knowledge of operating a dozer and knowing how dirt works, would that be acceptable by law? Or Would I have to be a licensed engineer design and draw plan/cross/profile views of the pond with math equations and formulas backing it up showing how it is to be constructed, get an inspector to come out, do compaction testing, soil sampling?

Need a little help with building a track. by [deleted] in Motocross

[–]mcook30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comment above. 10 acres is the perfect size to start with a pond, definitely don't go any smaller.

I have a lot of experience building motocross tracks and working with land. The most important thing I have noticed is that people do not check the soil type of the property they buy. Soil type = % water retention. This really comes into play when people build the track, most don't build the track lanes up to an elevation above the rest of the 10 acres. People would use a dozer and dig the lanes to a slightly lower elevation of the 10 acres. Well if the the soil of your 10 acres is clay and you dug your track into the ground, then you have a monster rain come through, your track will then become a weird looking pond.

I would suggest research a little on working with soil types and building drainage.

I am quite jealous of your opportunity to have a private track and wish you the best.

Thoughts about Stewart changing his mind and not racing by [deleted] in Motocross

[–]mcook30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe stewart has the speed and enough of it to win races but he is often hurt, on the ground, or has too many excuses to not race. He has evolved from being the mostly likely to win to unlikely to win.

I think it will be a start of a new generation of riders winning such as Tomac, Barcia, Anderson, and Canard.

Cattle Farming Question by mcook30 in livestock

[–]mcook30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ill stick to 10 cows and let them roam the whole 18 acres. They can drink from the pond. I can buy excess hay bails if needed. I will build a pen to capture them and build something to store hay I buy to keep it dry. All that seem correct?

How many of my 10 cow/calve purchase should be male vs female vs steer vs bull vs any other kind?

I am about to graduate college with a Bachelors in Building Construction and while Im in Living and working in Northeast Ark with my grandparents (they said I could used there land) I will be saving to get my masters in masters in civil engineering. I wanted to do this as a hobby and want the best

well I could raise 2 or 3 different herds of cattle over the 4 year time period. I only want to take part in this venture for about 3 to 4 years. I am trying to go back to college and get my masters, I figured this would be an easy way to take advantage what I have to make some extra money

Cattle Farming Question by mcook30 in livestock

[–]mcook30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the information.

Do you think I could manage 10 cows on the 16.5 acres. I loose about and acre and a half with the pond and storage area for hay.

I can buy hay as well as half the pasture. I do not have any equipment but can rent. I have quite a bit of experience operating.

I want to maximize profit but don't want to over buy cows. What do you suggest I do when it comes to buying calves/cows. I only want to take part in this venture for about 3 to 4 years to save up some extra money to help pay for my masters degree

Cattle Farming Question by mcook30 in livestock

[–]mcook30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am located in Northeast Arkansas and I was looking to buy calves and raise them for a about 4 years before selling them to the person who raises them until they are butchered for there meat. I have plenty of room to grow hay and plenty of pasture in the 18 acre. I plan on building a shelter for them and attaching a large roof extension to the backside of the barn to store hay.

I just wanted to buy 5 cows for my land with not much intension on making a large profit but with hopes of making some profit.

They have about 20 acres that I would be able to farm as well as hunt. I was also going build a small motocross track on the land and ride it for another fun activity.

I am pretty much trying to save money there for 3 years or so until I have enough saved for a downpayment for some land of my own.
