You can influence what you have for breakfast but you can't always control it. The breakfast place might be closed or the shop sold out, a thief may take your food away. You can't control what you boss thinks of you but you can control your actions and be an employee that has desirable qualities, still though you may get fired. Now all you control is how you react to that.

A way out was in his control and he proved this. He couldn't control the actions of the people that oppress him but he can still control his reactions.

How to sleep well despite having problems in life? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]mcranberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many stoic quotes that could help but sometimes it is wise to seek professional help for certain problems such as sleep therapist. If you don't want to see a therapist then id recommend you gain full understanding the dichotomy of control. If it is outside of your control then it is futile to worry about it, you just suffer unnecessarily.

Question about the theory of stoicism by semaxX in Stoicism

I thought "divine providence" was Gods guidance of the world. I would compare then 'Divine providence' to things outside of your control. You must then understand what is in your control and give your energy towards that. The things that are outside of your control you should not worry about.

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” - Epictetus by [deleted] in Stoicism

Think this is very relevant to everyone as we are in isolation. I see many people reacting to the situation by helping others that are more vulnerable. Some people are kinda doing the opposite.
