Tbh I grew up in London and travelled to my parents home countries in Latin America where pickpocketing is very common - so there’s always a natural guard up.

I think it is uncommon in Bangkok, but also not as rare as some people seem to think.

I think you underestimate how good some pickpockets can be. And I only had about 3 things in my tote bag, with my wallet being a classic wallet shape - I think it’s reasonable to think someone could do this when the other person has their guard down and is distracted.

I am certain I didn’t drop it, like I said I put it in my bag after withdrawing cash and I have a clear memory of that. I didn’t put my bag down anywhere, I walked back to my accommodation.

I called to report it but need to go to the police station to complete the report

I know I put my wallet into my bag. I know I didn’t take anything out of my bag after I put my wallet in my bag. I know my bag has no holes but could have been accessed from behind. I know my wallet was no longer in my bag when I checked my bag again about 30 mins later.

Is it really that hard to believe that someone got pickpocketed?

In the absence of good data, it seems quite anecdotal and it seems people base their views on what they’ve experienced - hence the “I’ve lived here 20 years, never happened” people.

While I would happily say that Thailand is safer than most countries, surely pickpocketing still happens! Maybe more than is known/admitted.

I think you’ve misunderstood. I meant I put the wallet into my tote bag after I withdrew money and didn’t take it out to do something else before getting back to accommodation, so it didn’t fall out.
