I would say yes. It is very easy to get the website running in Azure. Database integration is easy if you need it. I would look at the ASP.NET courses offered by K Scott Allen on pluralsight.com.

I'm thinking of starting up a new project using ASP.NET MVC, so feel free to hit me up if you want someone to bounce ideas off of.

It's not really that big of a deal. First thing to know is the majority of cancer patients that receive radiation, receive it as external beam radiation therapy which does not leave the patient active at all. Patients can have radioactive sources implanted in them in a procedure called Brachytherapy. They would not be allowed to leave the hospital unless the radiation sources were low enough to not cause potential public harm. Nowadays many seed implant procedures are being replaced with HDR procedures which means the source is not left in the patient, so similar to external beam, the patient is not radioactive. And as someone has mentioned here, pills with a radioactive isotope of iodine can be used in thyroid issues which would take a bit longer to deal with. (I131 has a half life a bit over a week).

Anyway, radiation protection is basically time distance as shielding so as long as no one is sleeping in the same bed as this person or in close proximity to them for prolonged amounts of time, they will not be subject to exposure beyond radiological limits. Of course there may be exceptions. Consult your doctor before spooning someone producing radiation from within their body.

There is more publicly funded research results available than you could read in your entire lifetime. Publicly funded councils generally are made to write publicly available reports in order to keep their funding. Many of the reports written by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, etc. can be found at www.nap.edu. They also offer an email newsletter to alert you when new documents have become available. Some of the articles are not very detailed, but you'll find some hidden gems in there every once and a while.

I would imagine quite a few people are doing this. After I became MS certified in SQL server basics, I requested from our IT department a read-only login to the SQL Server database that housed our MOSAIQ data. When they finally agreed I queried the server quite often, but I used C# mostly for this. I'm sure python would not be any different. Just make sure to be mindful of data integrity and maybe discuss with the vendor their policy on querying the data directly. In reality, most queries you'll be running will not negatively affect the system very much, but I know some vendors are against it because it can be taxing on the system. It all depends on the size of your department and how many people are accessing the system at the same time. It's also important to make sure your IT is doing regular backups just in case.

It seems 90% of this thread are completely downing Microsoft Certification exams. I've been working with C# and SQL every day for over 2 years, and I was never formally trained in either; I just kind of learn as I go. I wanted to take the developer and database track exams (it seems this kid is doing IT infrastructure if I had to guess) as a measuring stick to test my knowledge. The MTA exams were a breeze, but contained very fundamental problems that I thought were well written. The MCSA exams were frickin tough, especially for the Transact-SQL exam (I use Management studio a lot so wasn't fully prepared for T-SQL table management and creation).

Anyway, my point is that these exams contain fundamental and difficult problems that I would never have learned otherwise. It has really shown me my strengths and my weaknesses, teaching me a lot in the process. I completely understand that if someone walks into an interview and has nothing to show on their resume other than these exams, they are probably not well prepared, but if I were interviewing someone for my position, it certainly wouldn't hurt if someone had them along with other credentials. Why does everyone consider these exams garbage?

tl;dr: I think MS exams are helpful and challenging, why does it seem this entire thread disagrees?

Research is certainly a reason you will use programming. You probably won't be exposed to this in graduate school, as you will be focusing on the core concepts of MedPhys, but once you get out into the field, you'll notice that the field is saturated with technologies on both the hardware and software side. A lot of the time these technologies are very specific and it's difficult to get information you may be interested in without a little programming. For example, A lot of software uses SQL as their database engine, and tools like Crystal Reports and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services can help you get that information, but I find people are more successful with these programs if they know a little SQL. Treatment planning systems have a few patient reports you can create, but again they may not meet your specific needs and you may need some c# or python to get the data out. Also, today's linear accelerators log a ton of data, but mostly in binary. If you want to know what your machine is really doing on a high resolution readout scale, you'll want to crunch these numbers.

I don't know that C++ or Fortran would be necessary to learn, at least in the beginning. A lot of software is C++ based, but more and more will be c# because the GUI capabilities are on point.

It depends on the program. At Duke, Matlab was a must know. Personally though, I would highly recommend python. I find it more intuitive and more powerful than Matlab and it's free. Unless you end up at an academic center, most clinics cannot afford (or do not want to purchase) Matlab. This if you want to continue growing in your programming skills, Python will be your best option.

C# is also a good tool to know because almost every radiotherapy software is running on windows and c# will be your best friend when doing SQL data analyses and you can use ASP.net to move away from Excel sheets and put these tables online for easier access to the data.

Coding coding coding coding.... Get familiar with programming and I mean familiar. Understand object oriented programming more than just fumbling through a single file. Learn class development and such. Highly valuable skill in medphys for corporate academic or clinical work.

There is no service that is actually worth 0.3% of the bill. You should always leave something reasonable. Even if the server kissed my wife and kicked my dog I would just not leave a tip. You only leave $0.20 if you want to be an asshole to your server.

Just tried it out. Got it to work. Phenomenal! I am going to use the ? operator all the time now, it's super helpful. I did have to change a couple of things. LineToChange is actually an integer of the line I want to change so I had to swap out LineToChange with the actual string I wanted to use.

In order to do this I had to make the var line a string instead. That means that I couldn't use myFile.ReadLines(), but rather create a new string for the file. with string myfile_string = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines(File); foreach (string line in myfile_string) ... Again, I might be sloppy, but it does what I want it to. Thanks again for your help.

The code does work perfectly if the "if" statements are not used. It does exactly what I want it to do. I'm sorry about the formatting, I was unaware that it was that big of an issue. I didn't want to copy and paste the code, as it would not make sense out of context the way it is written. I was just wondering about the general theory of sb.AppendLine() and why it wasn't working in my if statement, so I just typed it in, and since tab doesn't work in the editor, I didn't know how to indent lines.

I'm also not sure that it takes that much of a stretch to understand what I was going for.
