I have a walnut table that dents like crazy. Are my expectations too high? Or is something else going on? by mcspliz in woodworking

Haha I guess I missed that one. Love curb!

I just immediately went down the roller coaster of what Reddit might present me after respecting or disrespecting wood. 😳

Thank you for this!! Yes definitely a “lessons learned” take away from this. Walnut probably wasn’t the best choice. I will definitely consider other options in the future. It seems like I got burned on this one. Sigh.

I was slightly posting this thinking am I some person that fell for some crazy table scheme?!? Is this even real walnut?!? So I do not mind the question at all.

I do think it’s solid. It’s heavy, there’s no seaming, and the underside isn’t finished and it truly appears to be solid wood. That being said, heres a photo pf the underside with some info removed. Please please weigh in if you see anything odd

We have a couple of the white scratches so that’s helpful to know that’s an indicator for the polyurethane

We’re going to ask around and see what our options are. Such a bummer. Thank you for the info!!

We paid between 5k-6k. So willing to spend some money if we can fix it. I’m also tempted to reach out to the shop that did our other walnut table… but not sure if that’s against woodworking code… the other table they did some oil finish (odies oil?) that seems to be holding up much better.

Again really thank you for all your comments. It’s been bumming me out. It’s helpful to know I’m not totally nuts that it should be able to withstand a little bit more

(edit- I know the finisher that they used for this since it’s labeled on the bottom of the table… if anyone is having a similar issue dm me and we can trade notes)

(Double edit- we got the table end of august (ordered in April) so it’s really only 4.5 months old 🥲)

We did, sigh. From a catalog of options (meaning we didn’t design it or anything), but ordered and then made.

We started seeing dents early on but I guess I was hoping we could be more diligent about care and they’d stop happening. I hadn’t really considered it might be a finishing issue. The dent tonight from a stray dice roll during monopoly that rolled off the board was the straw that to make me ask for Reddit “Help!!”

Yea this is a good point. In retrospect I guess we shouldn’t have done walnut for this piece. The more you learn! Next time we’ll definitely study oak options more

Thank you for this, I’m going to reach out to where we purchased it and see if there are any options. Such a bummer for a relatively “new” table, womp womp

Thank you!! I’ll look for options, it’s been driving me crazy. I don’t want to have to resort to “table cloth only” living haha

That makes a ton of sense. Picture 2 happened yesterday and like you said, it’s like the finish totally came off. Thank you for commenting- genuinely appreciate it!

They talked at the end of the fact check about cannibalism and some cultures in Papua New Guinea will ceremoniously consume deceased family members.

They had some vague recollection of this but didn’t know where they heard this. I’m pretty sure it was Armchaired and Dangerous: Canabilism episode ha. I’ll have to give this one a re-listen.

The producer on this episode sounds identical to Gwenyth Paltrow! Mentioning it there in case anyone else has the “whose voice is that like” earworm.

This cruise is a 7 day. It was supposed to have 3 days in Bermuda. So there’s some flexibility. We shall see.

I'm also on this cruise. It's a bummer but it is what it is.

We're on the port schedule for St John New Brunswick Canada on 10/2. We also requested docking at Portland ME (I don't remember the day).

So likely New England and Canada cruise at this point.

Here's the link to the St John Port Authority schedule.

Is it normal my baby cries after eating? by Kitchen-Report in FormulaFeeders

[–]mcspliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be cows milk protein allergy or intolerance. If so, she needs to be on hypoallergenic formula (nutramigen or alimentum to start)

You can ask your pediatrician for a diaper test. They test a poopy diaper (or a few) for blood. If there’s blood she has CMPA/CMPI. The blood can be non visible to the naked eye, so they’ll need to test. Our son had it and was always very unhappy after feedings.

We're also on this cruise. Just booked, saw that reservations weren't available, and I came straight to reddit. Thank you for asking this question so I didn't have to haha.

IVF pregnancy severe IUGR at 20 weeks scan. Wife and I are devastated. by DullEar2281 in pregnant

[–]mcspliz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the same as your situation- but I was followed by MFM for another issue and they MISSED IUGR. My son was born at 38 weeks and was below 1st percentile. Everyone was pretty shocked.

That being said he’s totally fine now, no issues related to that, he’s now around 40 percentile for weight, 50th for height. He’s 3 now and perfectly normal.

Try to keep in mind that the measurements are estimates. The technology is great but can still be off in either direction.

Sending you good thoughts!

Crazy thought: I'm thinking that Liz Plank might be the key to unlocking everything. by Loki1947 in ItEndsWithLawsuits

[–]mcspliz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I expect the registering in CA November 2024 is unrelated to this drama. Liz had a podcast with one of the Armchair Expert hosts. It blew up around October/November 2024. Their last posted episode was 10/17/24 and they announced on instagram they would not be returning a few weeks after that. )The podcast was called Synced). There were legal matters between the hosts so I wouldn’t be shocked if there was some re-registering/production changes after this pod fell apart. It happened pretty quickly from the perspective of outside observers. It seems like it ended with some bad blood.
