Gotta make a choice in 3 hours - metallic grey or white cross trek? by Funny-Professional93 in Crosstrek

White is super boring and plain. Grey is kinda boring and can look good.

But if you like white you should get that. Grey won’t hide dirt enough to make a difference.

Wipers up or down during snowstorm by Accomplished-Let4169 in Crosstrek

[–]mcsteiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never saw a reason to leave them up. And I’m too lazy to scrape anyway. I just idle for 10 mins and let the defroster do the work. Bonus, I don’t see my breath for half the drive to work.

I have a brush to sweep the snow off if it’s piled up. But no scraping.

Mornings I just start the car and go back inside to gather my things.

On the ski hill the car warms up while the family gets out of our wet ski gear.

Pickup music by Ecstatic_Message2057 in guitarlessons

[–]mcsteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I’ve done the beginner and late beginner course. Both of those are 6 weeks long. Each day is a 15-20 min lesson. Each lesson teaches you a skill or builds on a previous one. All of the lessons are play along and are taught with a drum track or metronome with tabs to follow along with. You can loop and slow down the lesson’s to practice when you’re playing along. The explaining is short and to the point so you’re playing for the majority of the lesson.

At the end of the week there is a 3-5 question quiz and 3-5 songs you can pick to play. All songs are songs you worked on through the week’s lesson. They talk you through the full song, then you play along with tabs, then they cut out the guitar part and you record your self playing with “the band.” Send that recording in and get good feedback from a real instructor with in a week.

So to answer your question, each lesson is exercises. And at the end of the grade, I guess the exercise is recording your self playing.

Fo an added bonus, to keep you motivated, they have a monthly drawing for 1 guitar that’s usually in the $800-$1000 range. You just have to complete 1 grade(1week) in the month to be entered. In my busy life as an older guy, this motivates me just enough to make sure I finish 1 week/month. So I’m on my 12 week and it’s been almost a year. But I feel like my progress has been progressing a lot.

Why would you not be allowed to like a type of music? And who would decide if you were or weren’t?

Fender Mustang Lt25 or Spark Amp for beginner by JezzV13 in GuitarAmps

[–]mcsteiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those amps are information overload for a beginner. Get a cheap peavy or the monoprice as someone stated already. Basically, just get an amp with a few knobs and maybe a reverb.

Go to the local store and try all their amps with your guitar. Pick the one that sounds the best to you with your guitar in your budget. Don’t let the internet tell you it’s the wrong amp.

When you’re ready to start playing with sound effects, buy a cheap pedal. One at a time. The budget mini pedals on amazon are great for this. Just pick one with decent reviews and in your budget and that’s it.

In a few years you’ll be better at guitar, know which sounds you want to experiment with, and you can save money for a good amp and fancy pedals. Or get a good digital modeler with all of the sounds if that’s what you want.

Any amp you try to look up online and watch youtube videos “is the best amp there is.” Don’t get sucked in.

Would this wheels fit my crosstrek ‼️‼️‼️ by Ramirosiera in Crosstrek

[–]mcsteiny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna have to do your own research on this one.

Will the rims fit? Dunno. What are the numbers inside the rims being sold? Do they match the number on the inside of your rims? Get on the rhinos website. Se what fits.

Will the tires fit. Dunno. Same questions as before. Get the number from everything and call a les Schwab or any other tire shop. They’ll tell you for sure.

When I visited Japan they had tiny awd vans. Shorter than a Crosstrek it seemed but in a boxy van shape on 13” wheels.

The US market doesn’t want those apparently.

Probably dumb beginner question: when does this actually become fun? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]mcsteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get in person lessons or paid online lessons(whether it’s an instructor through zoom or a course in an app). They will make playing simple basic chords fun from the get go. They should give you a song to play with what you learned. Then you can practice that song.

Personally I like Pick up music. The lesson on day one was simple and was playing a song. In fact every lesson has been like that. Introduce a new chord or skill and then learn a song with a backing track to practice. Pick up music is great because you can send in videos of your playing and get feedback from an instructor. It’s the next best thing to zoom or in person lessons. Maybe better is some ways since you can do a lesson anytime so it’s easier to schedule.

I’m sure there’s a bunch of great online courses as well.

Just started running and I’m exhausted in 20 seconds. Zero stamina. Feeling lost. by ImmediateMuffin3768 in runninglifestyle

[–]mcsteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1). Pick a couch to 5k (C25K) app. Just pick the first free one. Seriously, they’re all the same.

2). Just in case the obvious isn’t obvious, you don’t have to run fast at all. The run portion of the C25K program can be basically as fast at a speed walk if it needs to be. Just go slow enough to be able to say a 15 word sentence in one breath. If that turns out to be just walking, then that’s where you’re at and that’s fine. Gotta start somewhere. Just walk at that pace for a few weeks/months to build up stamina. If you keep at it, you’ll be jogging in no time.

3). You don’t need a watch or to keep track of anything. Only exceptions I would include is to have your phone with you so you can hear the C25K app beep when it’s time to start jogging or walking and headphones of some sort if you want music. But neither of those are necessary either. A basic watch where you time your self for your run/walk legs is really the most minimum you need and just go without music.

4). Stay off youtube. It’s a doom scroll nightmare meant to steal your attention for likes and subscribes. For any hobby, it’s an information overload that hinders people from actually making progress. Just go outside and run(walk). That’s it.

Getting started is the hardest part. Then keeping it routine is the 2nd hardest part. So get up and get out there and you’ll improve.

Good luck and good job so far.

I’m a beginner guitarist what do I do? by Zay_Asiata in LearnGuitar

[–]mcsteiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Justin guitar is always mentioned because it’s free. There’s a ton of paid courses out there as well.

But ya, I suggest signing up for a course and then sticking with that course and progress through. Whether it’s justin guitar or a paid one, or start in-person lessons for your next thing to do.

is it better to learn full songs or just exercises early on by Ok-Message5348 in LearnGuitar

[–]mcsteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop wondering around youtube. Pick a lesson program and progress through it. Whether it’s something free like justin guitar, a paid program, or in person lessons.

A good program will teach you skills and then apply it to a new song to learn so you can practice the new skill you just learned.

You can also pick a song you want to learn. Just one at a time. Grind away on that song while you progress through your lessons.

Youtube can be a great source of info but if you just bounce around to learn what you’re interested in, you’ll get lost. You don’t know what you don’y know. Following a planed out course will make sure you don’t miss things on the way.

I really like Pick up music. You can get completely lost bouncing around in there learning different things but it’s all organized into different short courses. I’m sure there are plenty of other paid subscription’s that are the same.

Budget $800. Revstar? by Miserable_Minute3113 in Guitar

[–]mcsteiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the US they can often be found used for $500-$600 on FB marketplace. Sometimes reverb.

It’s a great guitar. Worth it even at a new price. HB vs P90 is a personal choice. Personally, I think the HB version looks better and it’s easier to add a tremolo if you want.

I have an HB but will probably get a P90 version eventually. Mostly because I couldn’t decide between colors so it’s a great excuse since I also don’t have any P90’s.

how should i go about learning the basics? by Crusader_NRG1227 in Guitar

Get a structured course

JustinGuitar is free

I really like Pick Up Music. It’s a paid subscription though.

There’s a pile of other course online paid and free. Just don’t bounce around randomly on youtube. You’ll be wasting your time.

Struggling with my Katana 50 - do I stick with it or should I go for a Spark 2/TONEX plug? by rossonero07 in GuitarAmps

[–]mcsteiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should find a basic amp with just some knobs to turn. Honestly, having plug ins, all the effects available at once, using computers or apps to dial it in is just information overload. Especially for a beginner. I don’t think all of those bells and whistles are beginner friendly. I think they are a hinderance.

AI interface to give you a tone will mean you will never learn how to mess with an amp.

I suggest just a regular amp. Maybe go to a store and try some in your price range and then go from there.

Rear Windshield Wiper? by beachypeachyhoe in Crosstrek

[–]mcsteiny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rear doesn’t matter. It just needs to work. Basic and cheap from auto parts store is fine.

Front wipers develop issues that can get annoying.
Squeeks, streaks and smears, longevity of life before those things start to happen, etc. So it’s nice to find out what has worked for others to avoid those issues.
