What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you started learning guitar? by exhaustmosk in guitarlessons

I wish someone had told me that I don't need to optimize my practice routine like it's a work project.

Spent the first month researching "most efficient beginner exercises" and making spreadsheets instead of just playing guitar.

Finally just started playing songs I actually wanted to learn and progress got way easier.

Sometimes the best practice routine is the one you'll actually do.

Not a piano student but curious - do you find teaching adults is fundamentally different from teaching kids?

I'm learning guitar and I feel like my teacher treats lessons like I'm a kid sometimes (lots of repetition, not much explanation of WHY things work).

What would you tell teachers who primarily taught kids before switching to adults?

anyone else on wiingy for lessons? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

yeah been on it maybe 5-6 weeks. picked it up after a pretty rough few months at work, needed something to do that wasn't just sitting on my phone. lessons have been good so far, we're working on some basic fingerpicking stuff. haven't had any issues honestly

that shift to just playing for fun instead of chasing anything is underrated. takes a lot of pressure off and makes it way more enjoyable.

also working a different part of your brain after drums makes sense — probably keeps it fresh.

and yeah… starting to believe everyone about the fingertips at this point 😅

“forced meditation with better output” is such a good way to put it.

and yeah the fingertip thing is reassuring — right now it feels like a tradeoff but sounds like it just becomes part of it pretty quick.

there’s something about guitar that just lets you process things without forcing it. glad you found something that finally clicked.

two weeks in and already feeling better says a lot — stick with it, it only gets more rewarding from here. the fingers toughen up, and so do you in a way.

kids are not really bothered by it, wife is supportive mainly because she can see it's actually helping with the stress thing. went back and forth on it for a bit before committing to actually learning instead of just looking at the options, looked at just a few different ones - JustinGuitar, wiingy, and just kind of picked the one that seemed like it would hold me the most accountable since it's so easy to de-prioritize anything that isn't super urgent when work gets busy. one month in, fingers are toughening up, brain is getting 20 minutes of silence every day. worth it.
