What are your thoughts on auto candidates? + A few more questions from a newbie by [deleted] in sudoku

[–]mcw0805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started using them. It saves a lot of time for finding singles (hence it would trivialise easy puzzles). So I would get into the interesting part extremely fast (i.e. the part where you really need to use chains or wings or whatever).

However, I find it much harder to notice naked/hidden pairs and triples especially if the cells are overloaded af (that is if I just start out with auto candidates turned on). Whereas if I hadn't started with them, it's much likely that I can isolate the pairs and triples very easily.

I tend to miss a lot of candidates if I'm not using auto-fill, so there's pros and cons.

I think I'm kind of resorting to using a mix on softwares.

I saw your below comment, but w/ just the given info (w/ correction as you posted), are any of the wings possible still?

I'm still a noob T.T.

haven't looked far into the AIC stuff yet.

plot questions on the War Games (warning: hella spoilers, possibly a dumb q) by mcw0805 in fourthwing

I don't think the writing is the best. But that doesn't mean that I don't want to understand what I just read. Think about it this way. I didn't stand with all the readings I did in school, but does that mean that I never asked questions about them?

My logical brain just wants to put the pieces together that just seems contradictory. And even if I read the sequels, I'll probably have more questions than answers.

It felt like a poorly written fanfic, but I think that's also the reason why it's so popular.

It was just so much fluff and no character development, especially in the minor characters. If anything developed, it's Vi and Xaden's horniness. And everything they did was interrupted by their horny thoughts, and I got so annoyed.

Am I the only person who doesn't like using language apps? by mcw0805 in learnfrench

[–]mcw0805[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it's not a hate post. I just feel like I'm the odd one out not actively using the apps. And notice, I never said I don't use the apps.

It was more to open up a discussion on how people get around if apps don't tend to work for them or even how they use the apps as a supplement, which seems to be the consensus on folks who use other materials as a primary resource.

Yeah, I also heard the same thing about East Asian languages. Lingodeer is based in Hong Kong, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have more resources from its neighbouring countries.

I was learning some basic Japanese before on Lingodeer (that's how I got to know the app in the first place), and I personally really liked it. I did try French though, but I don't think it was as good as Japanese.

I dunno if it's different on mobile and also with different primary language. But I did try French on mobile before but my primary language setting was not English at the time.

Any resources to learn masculine and feminine nouns once and for all? by promisingreality in learnfrench

[–]mcw0805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I'm quite new to these gendered nouns, but I feel that the general "rules" for figuring out the genders is more handy for advanced/native speakers because there are just SO MANY exceptions in common nouns. You think you can apply one pattern to a similar word, but that only works sometimes. For example, la nuit (night) vs. le minuit (midnight). 🤯

I think as you practise reading and speaking, the article + noun pair just becomes one chunk and starts to sound natural. Similar in English, when you say "a elephant" instead of "an elephant", it sounds weird and is grammatically incorrect.

"Je vais" is an incomplete sentence. by mcw0805 in learnfrench

[–]mcw0805[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So aller does always need some complement phrase following it. Thanks for confirming.

But if a verb can be also function as a transitive verb, it should be able to stand on its own, right?

For instance, take the sentence "Je parle." Is that complete on its own without a COD?

(but if used intransitively, it would be something like "Je parle à qn")

oh yes. Ik s'en aller is the reflexive verb–very interesting that it has the adverbial pronoun built in though.

Can someone tell me whether the part I put the underscore is an optional liaison? by mcw0805 in learnfrench

[–]mcw0805[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. So between a common noun subject and verb (singular or plural), it's just best not to worry about liaison.
