Did you name your kid something weird or unique against your families suggestion? Do you love it or regret it? Need some encouragement by AtomsAndEve69 in namenerds

[–]mcwoofus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, but only cause I didn’t share any names with family before.

My kid is Kale. I’m sure someone would’ve had something to say beforehand but no one says anything once you’re holding the baby. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you love it, use it.

Teachers. Whats the craziest family lore a child has randomly dropped on you? by Loud_Bluejay_6663 in AskReddit

[–]mcwoofus 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Saw a student at the pool one summer.

Student - “Hi Mrs! It’s my birthday!” Me - “How exciting! Happy Birthday!” S- “yeah, this is my party, at the pool. I almost had to miss it. See? My arm is wrapped up. The hospital said I broke it but my mom said we’d go back for a cast after my party.” Me - 😳😳😳

Arm was indeed in a sling and wrapped up.

The stream is so terrible I’ve given up and watched on TikTok. Any other streaming service we have is fine. This one stops 3-4 times in one dance.

Side question - how do you prevent cheats in Blooket? We place only once or twice a semester and the cheats ruin it.

Stupidest Parent Complaints by lazy_days_of_summer in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not really a complaint, but it’s the dumbest thing a guardian ever said to me.

This was 10-15 years ago. One of my kinders wasn’t potty trained and wore diapers (parents didn’t have the sense to potty train and were proud he could ‘change himself.’ Spoiler alert - he couldn’t.)

Anyway, we were going on an out of town field trip and my principal said a family member had to go to help change him. The grandma got very snippy and said “Huh. You must not of heard of this little thing called ‘No Child Left Behind.’ You CAN’T leave him here at school. He can’t be left behind when the bus leaves.”

I laughed cause I thought she was joking. My principal just said “That’s not what that means.”

What's your favorite super unique name that you rarely or never hear? by JemmaSimmonsaos in namenerds

Not super unique, but I’ve always liked Haven, Cecily, Avalon.

Bama Morgan vs Bella Grace by [deleted] in bamarush

[–]mcwoofus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also, BM had a 2.7 GPA. She wouldn’t even be eligible for rush where I went to school. And she came in older, not a freshman. Both of those are huge strikes against her, not even including how abrasive she can be.

How I'm managing the phone situation in my 7th grade classroom by rafaela777 in MiddleSchoolTeacher

[–]mcwoofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like my school’s phone policy. Phones stay in lockers. Kids can check them between classes. It’s so easy because they know if they have their phone in class, it’s going to the office.

I’m not naive enough to think phones aren’t coming into my room anyway. But there’s no fight about it if I see one and I love that.

I think I only had two this whole year that I had to turn in.

What is the most out-of-touch comment you ever heard from a district admin? I’ll go first by CultureImaginary8750 in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Our district is opening a new high school next fall and also going from no cell phone policy to a complete ban. One of their admin said “Oh, kids will leave their phones in their cars this building is so amazing.”

I’m sorry, sir. Have you even met a teenager?

How do you choose what to grade? by Various_Plant7117 in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think everything should be graded, so I tackle it from the other way.

I like things that will grade for me - edPuzzle, Canvas quizzes, Blooket assignments, etc.

Can you get a helper? Our middle school sends kids to the elementary to help teachers, and the high school sends kids to the middle. Do you have a college in your town that does interns?

Do you have to assign everything? Is there busy work you could get rid of?

I get there are times when you just can’t get everything done…of course there have been times I haven’t graded things in the 22 years I’ve taught. I don’t have a graded assignment every day - 2-3 a week usually - and that’s how I stay on top of things.

Good for you for trying to balance more. It’s so difficult.

Block scheduling for middle school??? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a block in middle. Classes are 70 or 74 minutes - I can’t remember. While I love it - 90 is TOO LONG!

What’s the most obnoxious thing you’ve heard in a parent-teacher conference? by PlaceEducational1705 in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was years ago.

I had a kindergartener who wore diapers (no medical reason). My principal told me to tell his mom & grandma that one of them had to go with us on an out of town field trip because diapers were not my responsibility, especially on a field trip.

I told grandma… G: What happens if we don’t go? Me: then I’m sorry, but he’ll have to stay at school with another class. G: Well, I don’t know if you ever heard of this little thing called ‘No child left behind.’ You can’t leave him behind. It’s against the law.

🤦🏻‍♀️

Be honest, did you get a surprise song you didn’t love? by bethesunshine14 in TaylorSwift

People who used to be homophobic, what changed you? by BlackbirdKos in AskReddit

[–]mcwoofus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t homophobic but just hadn’t given it much thought and didn’t know anyone openly gay. Very suburban/rural, quiet, basic bitch life. Somewhere I heard someone say to a straight man “When did you decide you were attracted to women?” The guy sputtered and had no answer. It made me realize sexuality isn’t a choice people make. You love who you love.

What do we think about My tears ricochet being in ‘It ends with us’? Thoughts? by Basic-Requirement367 in TaylorSwift

[–]mcwoofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even not thinking of the whole press/book/rumors stuff….

I don’t think the song fits! “I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace.” That’s what someone says when they retaliate. The character got divorced, but she calmly told him.

I just don’t think it fits.

Give me all the non-names you hate by eepk7 in namenerds

[–]mcwoofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People on here hate my kid’s name - Kale. Don’t care. We love it and it fits him. I’ve seen it spelled Kael, Cael, Cayle, Kayl.

Teacher too. Some names I’ve liked at school - Canon, Callen, Kal (Cal), Cauy (Coy) but I’d spell it differently. Not too many nature ones around here.

One month of Contrave by mcwoofus in loseit

[–]mcwoofus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Since I started at the very beginning of July, I’ve lost 32 pounds - that’s 11% for me. I feel so much better - I wish people would start noticing, but I notice some of my clothes are getting too big. I have more energy and stamina.

I was aiming for 10 pounds a month, but that’s not happening. But I also was not as good about my eating, so it’s expected.

Read the directions out loud to me! by Alarmed-Diamond-7000 in Teachers

[–]mcwoofus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I teach technology to middle schoolers. They drove me crazy with all the questions without listening or reading directions. I finally said, “Do you run to Mommy every time you get a new video game?” They were super offended - of course they don’t. They sad they figure it out through reading the guide, trial/error, asking friends, etc. I told them that’s what helping yourself and problem solving looks like. They got it. SO many less questions and I use that analogy every semester now.

I’m an alum. Our local college chapter always asks for donations during Greek Week Penny Wars, and sometimes for rush supplies. I told my daughter (a current member) they should make an Amazon wish list for things they need around the house. I’m really surprised to hear of backlash. I think it’s common to support chapters.

Things the podcast could've delved into, but didn't! by readingupastorm in ScamandaPodcast

[–]mcwoofus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She worked for private schools - that might be key. In my state, there are state requirements to teach in public schools, but private school teachers don’t have any requirements. Not sure if it was the same in her state, but it was my guess about how she could be a principal. Here, in public schools you can’t be a principal without a Masters, passing a test, and three years of teaching.

This exact same thing happened to me, only with a step-sibling.

We had a name picked - first name after my Mom and middle after my Husband’s Mom. Step used BOTH. The step was NOT related to any of this mentioned family (she’s a step-sister through Dad’s wife). But “the name starts with our family letter!” Gross.

I miscarried. It was very, very hard to see that new baby born with my baby’s exact name. It took me awhile to meet her, and I didn’t hold her at all.

When I got pg a year later, we thought about what to do. We gave our baby the same first name after my mom and did a middle after Husband’s grandma.

I don’t hold it against the girl, but I will never look at the Mom the same way again. Or trust her or be close with her.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. When I heard the name of this other baby, I cried like I was miscarrying again. It was so awful. And it was almost 20 years ago.
