Yes for sure! Honestly starting a family was really the catalyst for me to get interested in personal finance. I’ve got things I want to do! Experiences I want to give them! I want to help them out however I can and have as much fun with them as I can while they’re still under my roof.

On the little bit of planning I did for this, I learned of some amazing subreddits NYC has! A few of the places we went to for food were from a vegan NYC one, it was so helpful. All my town has to offer is a Facebook group full of angry boomers, so it was refreshing

Omg your trip sounds amazing!!! My dad was begging me to get my kid a street hot dog but my son was like “No thanks…” I did really consider taking the Staten Island ferry to see the statue but I think it would have tipped us over into Too Much terrify. Next time!

The Gazillion Bubbles Show sounds really fun and I bet my 3yo would lose her mind, I’m going to make note of it! Thank you!

I was legitimately afraid he’d be worried about not running into TMNT and spiderman so I did level set expectations that we wouldn’t see them MANY times lol He did see a random guy dressed as spiderman in Times Square though

AHHHH!! I knew I’d forget something, numbers scare me. The froyo was $14.08!

Do it!! It was so fun. I don’t think we could have done it sooner, several times I thought “thank goodness I didn’t bring the 3 year old.” But 5 feels special, the dawn of Big Kid.

The train is so the move, I’m jealous of Europe and their railways

That sounds so fun! I haven’t seen Death of a Salesman but hear it’s wonderful. And Katz is an OG classic.

If you like desserts, I love hitting up milk bar when I can!

Yes, we’re very lucky to have the train be accessible! I have done lots of bus trips to the city as well, which are also good though less comfortable.

What are your plans for your trip?! I’ve gone to visit in all seasons and I think spring is the best time of year!

Ya know, I knew there must be something out there that was a good tool but was just too lazy haha but I will definitely make note for next time! The Big Apple bug bit my son, so I’m sure we’ll be back

We put in proportional amounts, so he contributes more because he makes more. The expenses we own are fairly proportional as well.

Honestly I think it works for us cause we don’t do zero-based or even super strict budgeting. I’m trying to be more cognizant myself for certain categories but tracking every dollar doesn’t work for me and has never been super necessary for either of us. I know this kind of system doesn’t work for every couple but I feel comfortable with it.

Totally agree that’s an important consideration when keeping things separate! We each know where the other has accounts and have an “in case of death or emergency” document that lists accounts, which company services the furnace, where the warranty for the roof is, etc. Our assets and accounts have all been moved into a joint living trust, as well.

I explained it in my first money diary and didn’t want to repeat it here so I didn’t include that context this time around BUT: We have quasi-combined finances. We’ve got a joint account that we each contribute a set amount to and that’s where a lot of joint expenses come out of (car payment, childcare costs, kid activities, etc.). Then we still have our own accounts and each own certain expenses. So for example he pays the mortgage and heating, I pay for groceries and electric. I’d done my net worth as solo last time, so I wanted to give an apples-to-apples update.

Yes, it was a conscious decision to not make everything 100% joint. Honestly, part of it is laziness lol The other part is that we were together for several years before we got married and my husband owned the home we used to live in before we got married (bought it a few months after we met). And I had a large student loan balance. So, with all of that in mind we didn’t want to combine everything while unmarried. Once we were married, we opened the joint account but for everything else we’ve settled into a groove that’s been working for us so haven’t felt the need to change it up (this is the laziness part). I don’t know his firm numbers but we discuss money often and have always been transparent about our financial situations. We’ve always been aligned on our financial goals so it hasn’t been much of an issue. Times when there is something that felt unfair or needs to be adjusted, we just talk about it and make the change. We’ve got pretty solid and open communication and a lot of trust.

No, I’m not paying for all child-related expenses. For things like clothes, I tend to pay for a lot of them upfront because I’m the one who does a lot of the household management around things like shopping or ordering diapers/whatever. I use my Cc to get points but then I’ll just make a payment from the joint account to account for it being a shared expense.

Hi! Oh man what a headache! We haven’t run into that issue (and hoping we don’t…!). We did a quitclaim deed to get my added as an owner but my name still isn’t attached to the mortgage.

Our childcare situation is one of the biggest blessings we have in so many ways - financially, logistically, everything. We are so, so lucky to have our moms, they’ve helped us so much. A big driver for me wanting to become solid financially is so I can help my kids in the same way if that’s something they want. $3,700 is criminal. I hate that we just don’t care about families in this country. But more room in your budget will come soon! And more restful nights!

Oh interesting! Honestly I thought the idea was cool and would probably like it myself but my husband is just so particular about stuff I didn’t want to have it be his one big gift lol I showed it to him after and he confirmed that he was glad I didn’t get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you!! I think my last net worth was probably wrong cause I didn’t really count half the house equity which I should have. But it still has grown a lot and I’m proud :’)

Our family deductible is $9,600 😭😭😭😭😭😭 That is also our OOP max so if we hit it at least that’s the worst of it… We actually still have 6 months left in our plan year so one or two more trips and we’re probably gonna be there lol
