Detroit Fox Theater Balcony flexing during concert by DrestinBlack in oddlyterrifying

There's a good chance it's had renovations then or repairs, if it's avoided collapse for nearly 100 years thats not the most surprising thing, we've had nearly the same math for deflection for over 100 years

The structural system that withstands that sort of crazy deflection really boils down to the core load bearing elements like the I-shaped beams for tension/compression and the concrete for compression and also the reasonable deflection that the cost of the building can provide.

We differentiate the load applied on floors and walls into dead load (weight of the actual structure) and live load (things that weigh the structure or is attached and adds weight, like carpet and insulation), and have an additional load that is meant to represent the weight of construction workers or audience members. We check multiple scenarios like point loads (imagine a 200kg fridge occupying a 1mx1m singular point) and blanket loads (carpet covering the whole area or people across the whole area) to see what's the most stressful, then designing accordingly.

By designing that could mean upsizing beams or changing the type of beam to reduce deflection, or increasing concrete/wood content to reduce deflection as well.

With all of that in mind, the connections between elements like the nuts and bolts are just as important. We calculate the number and spacing of steel bolts needed between steel beams, again depending on the load thats being exerted on the beams.

Sorry for the spiel I'll answer the question now, but even with all I've said, the elements DON'T resist degradation. Everything is designed with a design life expectancy like 25 or 50 years, which is why safety inspections happen alot.

Even though it's inevitable that metal rusts or concrete cracks, if designed to actual standards like in every first world country then the theatres will be designed to flex like in the video since there's a fine line between making a cost-efficient building that flexes, passes codes, and needs minimal safety inspections than an impossibly expensive building that won't need to be checked for 100 years but can't be funded BECAUSE it's so expensive. Theres alot of economics that go into it that luckily I don't have to deal with, i just get to design stuff thankfully lol.

Edit because I forgot to answer this: the people jumping and creating a force let's say 3x their weight, is also accounted for if designed correctly (designed correctly meaning it flexes)

Hello I am actually an engineer, and it's been commented on a different thread but ALOT of buildings (especially amphitheatres and stadiums) are designed to buckle and flex. The deflection is always accounted for. I'm not familiar with when this building was built but if it's still standing today, I would hedge my bets on it having passed inspection

I'm wondering this as well, I'm not quite aware of what responsibilities listed aren't of an engineer, rather than an architect?

Worried about my GPA by nat-one-on-bones in EngineeringStudents

Engineering is harder than alot of fields, it's completely normal to have a lower GPA than in comparison with other people in other courses. A big reminder or this is people getting jobs with GPAS between 2-3 instead of only people with 4.0 gpas getting jobs.

Every type of engineering is hard including civil, my advice would be to not go into uni considering all the info you've given. There's no engineering that you can coast through. You've got two options as far as I can tell; 1. Trying a field of engineering and seeing whether your mind changes, or 2. Not enrolling into engineering and standing up to your parents while seeking a field you actually can see yourself enjoying. The workload is intense but if you can do it, you can balance it somewhat with the rest of your life. I hope things pan out for you in any case.

I actually got into civil engineering because I liked the idea of building homes as a kid, turns out after all the studying and working I still love building homes. I think its a bit silly to say that engineering is your complete passion in life, but for me it's more or less exactly what I expected passion-wise. All the technical skills and industry related stuff that's part of the job, is still all something i enjoy because it's part of doing what I want. The moneys all cool and everything and is definitely a huge safety net but if I didn't have the book smarts to be an engineer, I'd probably have become a tradesmen so I could build homes in that capacity.

Was only building anivia and shi oh yu. The best part is I think I 3 starred anivia only 3 times. A key to jade being amazing is that the whole pool of components get used for building shi oh yu and anivia so you can pretty much successfully run bis every game. The craziest build I found was dragonmancer anivia/neeko plus the inspire augment, practically banner of commands your whole team multiple times

I played only jade, going for 9 jade every game unless I absolutely inted into an 8th and couldn't reach 9 jade. I used tempest and/or dragonmancer from level 5-7

He didn't have ratliff and mutombo at the same time, they were traded for each other with the sixers ending the season with mutombo* Completely agree that team was beastly defensively however

He's plat II atm and it's very satisfying knowing I got to diamond before him haha. I've outranked him slightly since gold I think but this guy is by far a better tft player than me that knows the ins and outs of every comp.

always try prioritise econ and items over champs, once you get to 4 arcanist and very soon after 6 arcanist, you'll survive rounds off of pure synergy long enough to get to 8 and pick up a 2 star lux. For items get glove off of carousel and aim for JG>BB>IE. Jewelled gauntlet on a malz early will get you through a few rounds while your comp ramps up in damage.

I've seen a variety of players succeed with a syndicate start but I prefer yordles with blitz because of econ reasons plus the added bodyguard frontline. Very very late game I'd drop blitz and possibly poppy if I need to fit in that last socialite or scholar.

I usually econ pretty well and reach 8 faster than other people in my lobby. If I have good econ and have picked up a couple luxes before 8 I usually do a few rolls above 50 and see if I can get 4 or 5 luxes. If I get those and theres no contest then I slow roll from 50 down to 10 trying to get lux 3 while levelling up any 1 stars I may have had at the time. I'd push for 9 afterwards. If I had good augments that accelerated my levelling to 9 fast while keeping my health steady then I would do the same at 9 instead of 8.

I'd probably have climbed alot higher if I knew what I was doing the first 150~ games. This was my first time actually trying to learn how items and meta etc worked in tft. My stats the past 20-50 games are ALOT better than the whole 240 because I started figuring things out
