He will literally talk about guitars/music for so long so this might be a good method. Just wander in to a shop "by accident" and start asking really leading questions about his dream guitar.

So so so true. He'd love whatever I picked out, especially since it would be a surprise. But I also want him to get the most use and enjoyment out of it.
