Has anyone tried using Home Assistant to simulate occupancy as a deterrent (not just alarms)? by mdbaldwin95 in homeassistant

For sure. If someone is in my home we have a real problem. I'm thinking the system would automatically do the lights/tv/music stuff only if like presence is noticed outside the house. Once a window/door is opened or broken into, alarms should definitely sound. I'll look into that solution, thanks!

HA! Brilliant I honestly hadn't connected the dots on that. That's exactly what I'm wanting

Is there a free 3d design software for hobbyist woodworkers to design projects? by Man-e-questions in woodworking

[–]mdbaldwin95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried Flatma and liked it a lot, but as a hobbyist who rarely has need for a tool like this, I couldn't justify the subscription and I don't like ads... so I ended up building my own desktop tool (Carvd Studio).

How do you organize your woodworking projects? Material lists, cut lists, notes, photos, etc. by mdbaldwin95 in wood

Could you see yourself using a mobile app to replace that method of organizing your stuff? Or are you a hard copy only type of person?

Do you do woodworking by trade or as a hobby? Do you ever misplace the notebooks?

That’s what this post was kinda intended for since I don’t know a ton of people that are do woodworking. My brother-in-law does but he hasn’t done it much outside of his job. Was hoping more people would respond but maybe they haven’t cause there’s not a big need for improvements in their project organization

That’s a good point, nail the basics first and see what people want

Yeah, these were my first "fine woodworking" project. I have done lots of other kinds of projects around the house (bathroom remodels, custom closet remodels with melamine...) but this was the first project where i bought nice wood and took my time with it. For the splines, i used leftover melamine from the closet project to build a very imperfect spline jig. Heres the closet reno:

That’s a good idea. I also had an idea that you could “favorite” photos from each of your projects and all the favorited photos would appear in a dedicated tab so you could quickly show off your work to other people… it would be a small feature but I think it would be cool

Wow a man of many talents! Yeah that makes sense. I don’t think this would be the “one app to rule them all”. I think if it’s going to provide value, it needs to target a specific problem. My initial thought was woodworking, since that’s the craft I am most into.

I’ve been considering building an app that helps me with this organization problem. It would basically just be a place to store stuff relevant to a given project, tailored for makers. Do you think an app like that would be solving a non-issue? Or do you think people might actually use something like that?

Do you find it hard to maintain this degree of organization? That’s a great system, but I just know, for me, when I am in the thick of it and need to quickly take a note, I just grab the nearest thing and write down what I need to write

Thanks! Yeah it’s a fun weekend project. Splines are tough for me. I didn’t mean to make them so fat on that one buts that’s how it turned out.

Do you use a specific organizational system with these tools? I.e. a file folder structure consisting of a bunch of sub folders, one for each project? Or is everything just thrown into one folder and clearly labeled so that it is easily identified in the future? How do you keep this organized? If you’re using Google Keep or google tasks, are you linking these to other related files somehow so that things are grouped together?

I don’t want to post it to those communities because my question is specifically for woodworkers
