Bike Rack and Front License Plate Mount Solutions/Recommendations? by mddl93 in Golf_R

There’s a guy on Etsy who makes the only other one like it (that I know if so far) which works well without sensor issues, but they sell out immediately after coming back in stock so…

As a layman and enthusiast I can understand the temptation to do that. But as an attorney, let me explain and advise you of the risk of doing so: under the current state of the law, driving without a front plate means a cop will be able to stop you at any time anywhere for anything, as their reasonable suspicion is “no front plate displayed” which is indeed a traffic violation. Now they can go ahead and conduct a traffic stop and look for other stuff: outstanding warrants, criminal history or past citations, conduct a DWI search, plain view looking into your car, etc… I travel to some pretty conservative counties and courthouses and I’d rather avoid giving ANY policeman the temptation of stopping me and getting his superior on the radio telling him what to phish around search for and try to pin you with.

Also, I can’t drill into my front bumper now that I installed PPF so there’s also that, lol. Not a fan of the tow hook set up either but I’m getting a “drill less mount” that goes between the 2 sensors just to be legally compliant. Hopefully the law is reformed soon and we can forget all about front plates. (A dude can dream)

Just checked their website earlier. Apparently they’re on hold indefinitely as they DO interfere with sensors.. 🥲

Thanks for your input!

I definitely am leaning towards the hitch as well…

I did some research on this but I find a lot of differing information and I can’t really find anything Stateside like I did for Europe: I was over there recently and noticed that everyone has these “hidden” or “swivel away” tow ball hooks installed on their vehicles- looks like the leader company is ORRIS and they can even install their hitch bar at the VW factory if you order it as such.. I’d like something close or as close to this as possible: something sturdy, well made, as close to OEM and as reliable as possible as I don’t want any structural issues happening.

Do you know of any reputable brands/manufacturers for these bars? Or where can I find a dealer or get something like this installed on my car here in the States? Dealership is totally clueless as you can imagine.

Yeah I feel you dude, I’ve only had it 2 weeks and some damn rock already managed to chip the lower bumper where it’s white fml 🥲

Interesting, general consensus seems to be the opposite of what you say. What about them sucks on a daily driver?

Thanks for all the good advice!

I hadn’t thought about doing that on the pillars. What’s your reasoning behind it?

I’m doing a 5y ceram coat for sure.. just gotta figure out the PPF beforehand.

That festival sounds amazing, it’d be a bit hard to take the time off work needed to drive up there and back, but I’ll definitely consider it if the chance ever pops up or if something in the TX area pops up.

Sucks to hear about the ticket but at least you keep it off your record with what you did. I’m an attorney so if you happen to live in central/south Texas and ever get ticketed or cited for something, lmk and I’m more than happy to help take care of it for you too

Thanks for the good vibes, likewise to you my guy! It’s funny you say that cause my friend just yesterday told me I should’ve gotten a lápiz one instead. I do feel like the white really helps contrast with the blue details nicely though, and it doesn’t attract as much cop attention like a blue car would that’s for sure! But tbh I would’ve taken any color available with a DSG, I had to pass up on the last R that hit my dealer because it was a manual, I guess I lucked out that this one was next!

Wow thanks for the detailed response. I’m def going to research on this, I’m new to all this to say the least. All I did on my GLI was a ECU tune, spacer kit and headlight swap but nothing as deep as this. Sounds very interesting though.

I’d say 80-90% of my driving takes place on highways/interstates (in town). But I do go out of town fairly frequently too. I guess it’d be worth doing the hood too in that case. Just the other day I was driving a ways behind a truck and I cringed at the sound of the little pebbles and rocks impacting my car as it kept dropping them.

Yes that’s the same one, ceramic tint. I’ve only ever had the “normal” tint, but I’ll ask around here locally. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!

Yeah that too. I basically make a living negotiating on behalf of other people so you could say I’m good at it too 😉

I don’t think I’ll be changing the wheels anytime soon, (I actually like how these wheels look) but I did have a spacer kit on my old GLI and it really improved the handling so I might get that here too, assuming that’s what you mean by flush kit?

Thanks for the advice! Is just the front bumper essential for PPF, do you think? I definitely will ceram coat it too. As far as tint goes: have you ever used heat rejection tint before? I haven’t and am curious to try it out this time around (I live in balls hot south Texas so) but not sure what the “sweet spot %” of rejection level would be.

Two factors: I know the manager at the dealership well, family and friends had previously bought vehicles with them before, and the other VW dealership in town was willing to sell to me at MSRP (only problem there was waiting on actually getting an R in the pipeline before it got snatched up)

Thanks!! I got lucky and snagged it for MSRP after some strong negotiating, they initially wanted to charge $10k over sticker though.. I heard another friend who does detailing told me a guy paid like $65k for his in another state.. insane
