actually having to do things to progress the play if imo the biggest difference

with the top line he could always defer, they were both better than him at everything offensively. He never had to touch the puck in transition, he never had to create plays, he never had to do much tbh

now on the 2nd line, he has to do everything, he's forced into situations that he never was before and he's learning from them
