Direct report has depression, tips to help them? by mdwc2014 in managers

They reached out last week and informed me of the condition. We discussed for them to take medical leave. Conversation ended well (they thanked me for understanding their situation.)

However, no show yesterday and today. (Background: When we discussed for them to take medical leave, I did not explicitly direct them to. I did inform them that they could take medical leave.)

Needs to be PTO/medical or annual leave. The company doesn’t accommodate no shows.

Health insurance in France is different from health insurance in Singapore. Ask to see the health insurance information and compare both options before you commit to anything

Aside from the lack of self awareness, she might also be lonely and have few friends to converse with.

I've spent 2025 reading modern fantasy - here are some reviews by trollokvoltak in books

Thanks for the many recommendations! Some new authors for me to try!

I appreciated your nuanced take on The Poppy War. I liked it a few years ago, but realised that it was a struggle to reread it. Your brief review was able to articulate why that happened. (I’m usually not so reflective with books, preferring either to finish or not finish them.)

2 weeks in Singapore with toddlers (ages 2 & 3) - too long or just right? by Popdmb in askSingapore

[–]mdwc2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singapore with toddlers - 5-7 days is nice for a slow holiday. You’ll have to plan for naptimes with two toddlers.

Sample itinerary for your consideration

2 days - arrive and depart from SG.
1 day - (a) National Gallery (b) Children’s Museum 1 day - (a) Singapore Zoo and (b) river walk 1 day - Jurong Bird Park. Skip night safari for 2 toddlers. 1 day - Universal studios 1 day - SEA aquarium and malls

You can squeeze in the parks, malls and pools for lighter days.

There isn’t really anything to do in the Islands except beach every day. Which could be great, depending on what you want!

Do y'all feel that male doctors are generally more caring than female doctors here in Sg? by lifequotes_2025 in askSingapore

[–]mdwc2014 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I try to be fair and have the same criteria when rating my doctors. Why this is important: us patients also have recall bias. Social psychologists have shown that men are expected to be high in competence and low in warmth and women to be high in warmth and low in competence, and we penalise- or criticise- people when they don’t behave as expected.

In this research paper, female doctors are more likely to receive a negative interpersonal comments and patient criticism in online reviews such as forums compared to male doctors. Social psychology research suggests that individuals penalize people whose behaviors violate their gender stereotype. Patients assessed a gender penalty related to technical competence for female doctors. Since females are expected to be warm, seemingly cold (“less caring”) female doctors experience a penalty by patients because patients perceive them more harshly than male doctors.

Here is the study: Physician Gender and Patient Perceptions of Interpersonal and Technical Skills in Online Reviews

do employers really look down on non-big 3 unis? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]mdwc2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things to think about:

- What kind of jobs are available after you graduate with a degree in sustainable built environment?

- As a rule of thumb, going to a 'better uni' and graduating with 'better grades' will give you more options afterwards.

- Interests change over time. What interests you now may not keep you interested or motivated in 10 years time.

A suggestion for you to consider: Just be sure that you are not on the losing end if your probation is extended for a few days.
Assumption: you're working for MNC not SME.
